Tech. Description

Draped Cowl Neck Short Sleeve Blouse

A hip-length women's top for knit fabric with short set-in sleeves and a draped cowl at the front neckline. The cowl is a separate upper front piece set over a folded front insert, and the front is gathered below them.

When To Wear

  • In summer with trousers, jeans or a skirt.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan, with the cowl showing at the neckline.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the shoulders, widening towards a rounded hem; the fullness comes from gathers at the centre of the front.

Length: Hip length, with a curved hem.

Neckline: Front cowl formed by the upper front piece, whose cut-on upper allowance is serged and pressed to the wrong side; a front insert folded in half fills the neckline beneath it. The back neckline is finished with a 4 cm bias binding.

Sleeves: Short, set-in, hems pressed under and topstitched.

Front: Main front cut on the fold and gathered between marks at its upper edge, where the insert and the upper front are stitched on.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Elastic or narrow zigzag stitch or a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hems topstitched with a twin needle or a coverstitch machine.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Few pieces and simple knit seams; the layered cowl and the gathered front need careful matching of marks.

Fabric Recommendations

Well-draping knit fabric of medium stretch, made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding 4 cm wide for the back neckline (ready-made or cut from the main fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance for the garment and sleeve – 1.5 cm, other seams - 1.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Upper front – 1 piece on fold
    • Front insert – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker. Before that, trim allowances to 0.7 cm.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Press the front insert crosswise, wrong side in. Overlock the all-in-one allowance of the upper edge of the upper front and press to the wrong side.
  2. Along the upper edge of the front between the marks, make a gathering stitch with loosened upper thread and gather. Stitch the front insert and the upper front to the front, placing the upper between the insert and the front. Press and overlock the allowances.
  3. Cut (or use ready-made) bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the length of the back neckline + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding lengthwise in half, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the neckline edge right sides together and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side, clip the allowances, and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  4. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
  5. Stitch the shoulder and side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Set in the sleeve, press and overlock the allowances.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the sleeve, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
