Short Sleeve Surplice Top with Gathers

Pattern #2347
Tech. Description

Fabric & Materials

Fabric recommendations: medium-stretch knit fabric made from natural or blended fibers. IF THE PATTERNS HAVE A DOUBLE CONTOUR, SEAM ALLOWANCES ARE INCLUDED. IF THE CONTOUR IS SINGLE, THE PATTERNS ARE WITHOUT SEAM ALLOWANCES. SEAM ALLOWANCES: hem and sleeve hem allowance – 1.5 cm; other seams 1 cm. ATTENTION! FIRST, PRINT OUT THE PAPER PATTERNS AND LAY THEM OUT ON THE FABRIC WIDTH (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH MATERIAL YOU WILL NEED. WHEN STITCHING PIECES, PAY ATTENTION TO THE NOTCHES - THEY MUST MATCH!

CUTTER'S MUST

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Upper front part – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When overlocking, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the allowance and press towards the back.
  2. Stitch the shoulder seams of the back and the upper front part. Overlock the allowances and press towards the back.
  3. Cut (or use ready-made) bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the neckline edge, right sides together, and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side, clip the allowances, and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam. Overlap the right front part over the left and secure at the bottom edge.
  4. Along the straight section of the upper front edge, stitch with loosened upper thread and gather. Attach the upper part to the front. Overlock the allowance and press upwards.
  5. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Set the sleeves into the armholes, press allowances and overlock.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and sleeve hem, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
