Understanding Pattern File Formats: When to Use PDF, PLT or DXF

Three formats dominate digital sewing patterns, and confusing them is a common and costly mistake. PDF, PLT and DXF look like alternatives but they are really specialists, each built for a different stage of the journey from design to cut cloth. Using the wrong one wastes time and risks scale or data errors.

PDF: the universal viewer and printer

PDF is the format anyone can open and print. It is vector at its core, so the geometry is scale-accurate, and it comes as large-format A0 sheets, tiled A4 or Letter pages, or layered files where you toggle your size. It is the ideal proof and the most accessible route to a paper copy.

What PDF does not do is editing. You cannot grade, restructure or re-nest a PDF in any practical way. It is an output and a reference, not a working CAD document.

PLT: the direct line to a plotter

PLT carries plotter commands, usually HPGL, that drive a pen or cutting plotter directly. It bypasses design software entirely, which removes any chance of an intermediate program rescaling the geometry. For driving a plotter, it is the most reliable choice.

PLT is not for viewing or editing. It describes machine motion, not pattern structure, so reach for it only at the output stage when a plotter is the destination.

DXF: the editable CAD exchange

DXF is the working format. In the apparel AAMA or ASTM conventions, it carries pieces, internal lines, grainlines, notches and grade rules, and it imports into the major CAD systems and into 3D tools like CLO3D. When you need to edit, grade, re-nest or simulate, DXF is the format that holds the necessary intelligence.

DXF is overkill for someone who just wants to print at home, and it requires CAD software to use fully. Its strength is exactly that depth, which is wasted unless you have a system to open it.

  • Viewing or printing a pattern: use the PDF
  • Sending to a cutting or pen plotter: use the PLT
  • Editing, grading, nesting or 3D simulation: use the DXF
  • Unsure: start with the PDF to understand the pattern, then move to DXF or PLT for production
