Pattern #7096
Tech. Description

Pom-Pom Earflap Visor Hat

Introducing a cozy winter hat pattern featuring protective earflaps, a practical visor, and a playful pom-pom detail, perfect for cold weather adventures.

When To Wear

This hat is designed for warmth and comfort in chilly weather, making it an ideal choice for:

  • Cold Weather Outings: Provides essential warmth and protection for the head and ears during winter activities.
  • Everyday Winter Wear: a practical yet stylish accessory for daily use in colder climates.
  • Playful & Cozy Styling: Adds a charming touch to children's winter outfits while ensuring comfort.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a structured, close-fitting hat with protective earflaps designed for full coverage.

Crown: Features a four-panel (gore) crown construction, topped with a playful spherical pom-pom.

Visor: a curved, firm visor provides frontal protection from the elements.

Earflaps: Extended earflaps designed to cover the ears and chin, complete with tie closures for a secure fit.

Construction: Fully lined and insulated for maximum warmth and comfort.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires precision in assembling contoured panels, working with different fabric types including fur, and attaching multiple functional elements like a visor and earflaps.

Fabric Recommendations

Achieve optimal warmth and structure by choosing insulating fabrics:

  • Medium to heavy-weight coat fabrics or similar insulating materials for the main fabric
  • Artificial fur for the earflaps and pom-pom sections
  • Lightweight lining fabric

Additional Supplies

  • Lining fabric
  • Batting/Insulation (Sintepon)
  • Fusible interfacing
  • Cord (for earflap ties)

Cutter's Must

  • Main Fabric:
    1. Gusset - 4 pieces
    2. Visor - 2 pieces
    3. Earflaps - 4 pieces
  • Fur:
    1. Side - 2 pieces
    2. Pom-pom - 1 piece
  • Lining Fabric:
    1. Gusset - 4 pieces
    2. Side - 2 pieces
  • Padding Polyester:
    1. Gusset - 4 pieces
    2. Side - 2 pieces
  • Fusible interfacing:
    1. Gusset - 4 pieces
    2. Visor - 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse the gusset pieces and the upper visor with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch the gussets in pairs, folding them right sides together. Topstitch the seam allowances at 0.2 cm. Fold the stitched gussets in pairs right sides together so that the centers align and stitch. Topstitch the seam allowances.
  3. Fold the fur side pieces right sides together and sew with frequent overlock stitches through the edge, bending the fur back to avoid catching hair in the seam, without stretching the sides to prevent distortion. Flatten the seam allowances with a hammer.
  4. Fold the lower edge of the crown to the wrong side. Join the gussets to the side so that the centers align. Sew the gussets to the fur side with frequent overlock stitches through the edge, similar to the side pieces.
  5. Fold the visor pieces right sides together and stitch along the edge. Turn the visor right side out, baste, and press. Stitch two decorative lines along the edge of the visor.
  6. Stitch the center seam of the earflaps in pairs, topstitch the seam. Baste the ties to the center of the earflaps. Fold the earflaps right sides together and stitch along the outer contour, turn right side out, baste, and press. Stitch two decorative lines along the edge of the earflaps.
  7. Fold the upper edge of the earflaps and visor to the wrong side. Fold the crown with the earflaps right sides together, secure the centers. Sew the fur edge of the crown to the earflaps with frequent overlock stitches through the edge, ensuring no stretching of the sides. Attach the visor similarly.
  8. Stitch the fur pom-pom piece with frequent stitches through the edge and gather it on a thread, but not completely. Insert a ball of padding polyester inside the circle, gather the circle, and stitch it tightly. Attach the pom-pom to the center of the crown.
  9. Fold the lining and padding polyester pieces and quilt them with parallel stitches forming diamonds. The distance between stitches is 2.5 cm. Stitch the lining gussets similarly to the main fabric pieces. Stitch the side pieces, topstitch the seam allowances. Fold the gussets with the side right sides together, stitch, and topstitch.
  10. Insert the lining into the hat so that it fits snugly against the top, secure with pins in several places, fold the edge of the lining, and sew with frequent blind stitches.
