Tech. Description

Silk Lace Robe with Flared Sleeves and Sheer Trim

A women's mid-thigh-length robe in soft silk with princess seams front and back, an open V-shaped front tied with a pair of fabric ties, and 7 cm scalloped lace applied along the front edges and on the lower sleeves, with the fabric cut away underneath.

When To Wear

  • At home over a nightdress, slip or pyjamas.
  • As part of a sleepwear or bridal-morning set made from the same silk.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, slightly widening towards the hem, shaped by princess seams running from the shoulders on the front and back.

Length: Mid-thigh length.

Neckline: V-shaped front opening with no collar; the back neckline is finished with a 4 cm bias binding turned to the wrong side and topstitched 0.7 cm from the edge.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves with one seam, widening towards the wrist. Lace is applied along a marked curved line on the lower sleeve and folded into a pleat at the curve.

Front: Centre fronts and side fronts. Scalloped lace is zigzag-stitched along a marked line next to the front edges, and the fabric beneath it is trimmed away; the front edge has no seam allowance.

Closure: Two fabric ties, 3 cm wide and about 25 cm long, sewn to the front edges and tied in a bow.

Back: Centre back and two side backs joined by princess seams.

Finishing: Princess seams pressed towards the centre, side and shoulder seams towards the back, all overlocked; hems of the body and sleeves overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Lace appliqué with zigzag stitching and cutting away the fabric beneath it, bias-bound neckline, and handling slippery silk.

Fabric Recommendations

Soft, draping silk fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Center Back – 1 piece
  • Side Back – 2 pieces
  • Side Front - 2 pieces
  • Center Front - 2 pieces
  • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • Bias strip for the back neckline, 4 cm wide (cut by measurement)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Place the lace on the center front along the marked line and stitch its inner edge from the right side with a small zigzag stitch. Carefully trim the excess fabric from the wrong side close to the stitching.
  2. Cut a bias strip 4 cm wide and as long as the back neckline. Press it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Place the binding on the right side of the back neckline, raw edges aligned, and stitch. Turn the binding to the wrong side. Understitch the seam allowance onto the binding 0.1 cm from the seam. Topstitch the back neckline 0.7 cm from the edge.
  3. Stitch the princess seams of the back and front. Press the seam allowances towards the center and overlock.
  4. Stitch the side and shoulder seams, press the seam allowances towards the back and overlock.
  5. Place the lace on the sleeve along the marked line and stitch its inner edge from the right side with a small zigzag stitch. Carefully trim the excess fabric under the lace close to the stitching. Fold the lace into a neat pleat at the curve and secure it.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam and overlock.
  7. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Overlock the seam allowances.
  8. Overlock the hem allowances of the robe and sleeves, press them to the wrong side and topstitch.
  9. Cut two ties from the main fabric, 3 cm wide and approximately 25 cm long. Fold them in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long side 0.5 cm from the edge. Turn the ties right side out, press, and sew them to the front edges.
