Tech. Description

Long Ruffled Robe with Bell Sleeves

An ankle-length women's robe in sheer fabric, shaped with bust and waist darts, with long sleeves ending in a two-tier flounce. A gathered ruffle with a rolled edge runs around the neckline, down both front edges and along the hem, and the front closes with small ties at the bottom of the V-neckline.

When To Wear

  • At home over a nightgown or lingerie.
  • As a bridal morning robe or a light cover-up in warm weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Shaped through the waist by bust darts on the fronts and waist darts on the back, widening gently to the hem.

Length: Ankle length.

Neckline: Deep V at the front, edged with the ruffle that continues round the back neck.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves, eased into the armhole. The sleeve ends in a flounce made of two tiers: the upper tier is set in between notches on the sleeve edge, the lower tier goes all the way round, and its edge carries a narrow gathered ruffle.

Front: Two fronts edged with the ruffle from neckline to hem. Two narrow ties, 10 cm long, are stitched into the ruffle seam at the bottom of the neckline.

Back: Centre back seam and waist darts.

Finishing: All ruffles are cut as strips of the main fabric, joined into a loop, rolled-hemmed on one edge, gathered on the other, and topstitched 0.1 cm from the joining seam. Seams overlocked.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Long gathered ruffles with rolled hems on sheer fabric, two-tier sleeve flounces and set-in sleeves with eased caps.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin, sheer fabrics in natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the waist darts on the back and the bust darts on the front. Press the waist darts towards the center of the pieces, and the bust darts upwards.
  2. Stitch the center back seam of the back. Press the seam allowances to the left side and serge.
  3. Stitch the shoulder and side seams. Press the seams towards the back and serge.
  4. Cut a trim strip from the main fabric (width and approximate length are indicated on the front piece). Stitch all pieces together into a loop, press the seams open and serge. Finish one of the long sides with a rolled hem, stitch along the other side with loosely tensioned stitches and gather to the desired length (indicated on the front piece). Attach the trim strip to the neckline edge of the back and front, the front and bottom edges, press the seam towards the garment, serge and topstitch 0.1 cm from the attachment seam.
  5. Stitch and serge the sleeve edge.
  6. Stitch the upper and lower flounces together, press the seams towards the lower flounce and serge. Attach the flounce to the bottom of the sleeve (the upper flounce is inserted between the notches), press the seam towards the flounce and serge.
  7. Cut a trim strip from the main fabric (width and approximate length are indicated on the lower flounce piece). Stitch all pieces together into a loop, press the seams open and serge. Finish one of the long sides with a rolled hem, stitch along the other side with loosely tensioned stitches and gather to the desired length (indicated on the lower flounce piece). Attach the trim strip to the bottom edge of the flounce, press the seam towards the flounce, serge and topstitch 0.1 cm from the attachment seam.
  8. Set the sleeves into the armholes, easing the sleeve cap. Serge the seam.
  9. Cut ties from the main fabric, 10 cm long each and 4 cm wide. Press the tie in half lengthwise, right side out. Then unfold and press the longitudinal edges towards the marked center line. Fold the tie along the center line, aligning the folds, and topstitch 0.1 cm from the edge. Attach the ties to the trim strip attachment seam at the lower of the front neckline.
