Tech. Description

Gathered Bust Empire Waist Sheer Nighty

An ankle-length women's nightgown in sheer fabric with an empire seam, a gathered bust section and a full gathered skirt front and back. The neckline and armholes are bound with bias binding that continues into thin shoulder straps.

When To Wear

  • As a summer nightgown in light silk.
  • As part of a sleepwear or bridal lingerie set.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Short bodice above an empire seam, with the lower part falling loose and gathered from the seam to the hem.

Length: Ankle length.

Neckline: Scooped front and back, bound with folded bias binding.

Front: The upper front has a pleat, is gathered along its lower edge between the pleats and along its upper edge, giving soft fullness over the bust. The lower front is cut on the fold and gathered into the empire seam.

Back: Smooth upper back joined to a lower back cut on the fold and gathered into the empire seam.

Straps: Formed by the bias binding that finishes the armholes, with no separate strap pieces.

Waist: Empire seam pressed upwards and covered with bias binding topstitched over it, front and back.

Finishing: Side seams pressed towards the back and overlocked; hem turned 1 cm, then 3 cm, and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Even gathering on sheer fabric, binding curved edges and forming straps from the binding in one step.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin, sheer silky fabrics in natural or blended fibres.
