Tech. Description

Blouson Blouse with Waistband

A waist-length women's blouson top with wide kimono sleeves, a lower edge gathered with elastic into a narrow waistband that ends in tie ends, and neckline and sleeve facings turned to the right side as topstitched bands.

When To Wear

  • Spring and summer, with high-waisted trousers, jeans or skirts.
  • Casual daytime wear in light cotton, linen or viscose.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and blousing over the waistband.

Length: Cropped, ending at the waist.

Neckline: Round neckline. The interfaced facing is stitched to the wrong side, turned to the right side and edgestitched 0.1 cm from its edge, so it shows as a band.

Sleeves: Wide kimono sleeves cut in one with the front and back, with an overarm seam. The sleeve hems are finished the same way as the neckline, with interfaced facings turned to the right side.

Waist: The lower edge is gathered between the notches with round elastic stitched on with a zigzag. A narrow two-layer waistband is attached over it and continues into tie ends that knot at the front.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Kimono sleeves without set-in seams, facings turned to the outside and edgestitched, elastic gathering and a simple tie waistband.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Back Neckline Facing, the Front Facing and the Sleeve Facings.
  2. Stitch the overarm (upper) seams of the sleeves. Press the seams towards the back and overlock.
  3. Place the pieces right sides together and stitch the side seams and underarm seams in one continuous seam.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Back Neckline Facing and Front Facing. Press the seams open. Place the right side of the facing against the wrong side of the blouse and stitch around the neckline. Clip the seam allowance on the curves, turn the facing to the right side, turn under its lower seam allowance and edgestitch the facing to the blouse 0.1 cm from the edge.
  5. Stitch the seams of the Sleeve Facings. Press the seams open. Place the right side of the facings against the wrong side of the sleeves and stitch around the sleeve hems. Clip the seam allowance on the curves, turn the facings to the right side, turn under their lower seam allowance and edgestitch the facings to the sleeves 0.1 cm from the edge.
  6. Clip the lower edge of the blouse at the notches. Overlock the section between the marks. Fold the overlocked edge to the wrong side and place the elastic underneath it. Stretch the elastic and stitch it in place with a zigzag stitch, leaving 1 cm free at each end.
  7. Place the Waistband pieces right sides together and stitch along three sides: from the notch to the side edge, along the side edge and along the lower edge. Turn the waistband right side out and press.
  8. Stitch the outer waistband to the lower edge of the blouse, catching the ends of the elastic in the seam. Turn under the raw seam allowance of the inner waistband and topstitch it along the waistband attachment seam.
