Raglan Sleeve Top with Sleeve Options

A women's close-fitting top for knit fabric with raglan sleeves in three lengths (short, three-quarter and long) and a round neckline finished with a folded neckband. The photos show one sleeve length. The pattern has one full-length sleeve; for a short or three-quarter sleeve, shorten it to the length you want.

When To Wear

  • With short sleeves in summer, with jeans, shorts or a skirt.
  • With three-quarter or long sleeves in spring, autumn and winter, on its own or under a cardigan or jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, following the body through the waist and hips.

Length: Hip length, with a straight hem.

Neckline: Round neckline with a neckband cut as one piece, sewn into a loop and folded in half lengthwise. The band is slightly stretched as it is sewn on, and its seam sits at the top of the left sleeve.

Sleeves: Raglan sleeves in three lengths: short, three-quarter and full length to the wrist. They are sewn to the front and back along diagonal seams running from the underarm to the neckline.

Back: One piece with no centre back seam.

Finishing: The sleeve seam and side seam are stitched in one continuous seam. Hem and sleeve hems are turned under and topstitched; a twin needle keeps the hems stretchy.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight raglan seams, one continuous side and sleeve seam, and a folded neckband attached with light stretching and matched notches. Basic experience with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and a twin needle is needed.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • A twin needle for topstitching the hems

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back – 1 piece
  • 2. Front – 1 piece
  • 3. Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • 4. Neckband – 1 piece

Tip: Cut pieces from knitted fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Hem allowance is stitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Attach the sleeve to the front. Serge the seam and press.
  2. Attach the sleeve to the back. Serge the seam and press.
  3. Stitch the sleeve seam and side seam in one continuous seam. Serge the seams and press.
  4. Serge the bottom edge of the garment and the bottom edge of the sleeves. Fold to the wrong side, press, and stitch down.
  5. Stitch the neckband into a loop. Turn the neckband right side out and press. Fold the neckband in half, wrong sides together. Attach the neckband to the neckline, slightly stretching the neckband and aligning notches. The neckband seam is located at the top of the left sleeve. Serge the neckband attachment seam and press.
