Tech. Description

Classic Polo Shirt with Sleeve Options

A women's close-fitting polo shirt in knit fabric, with a one-piece polo collar and a narrow two-piece placket opening at the front. The drawing shows it with short, three-quarter or long set-in sleeves.

When To Wear

  • Everyday wear with jeans, chinos or skirts.
  • Short sleeves for summer and sport; three-quarter or long sleeves for spring and autumn, worn alone or under a jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, with side seams curving in slightly at the waist.

Length: Hip length, with a slightly curved hem.

Collar: One-piece polo collar cut on the fold, stitched at the ends and turned; the upper collar is sewn to the neckline and the under collar edge is turned in and topstitched over the seam.

Front: Pull-on style with a partial front opening finished with two folded placket strips, 2 cm wide when finished. The right placket overlaps the left, and the lower end of the opening is topstitched in a small rectangle. No buttons.

Sleeves: Set-in sleeves; short, three-quarter and long lengths are shown.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and overlocked; sleeve and body hems turned up and topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A slashed placket opening with clipped corners, sewn in stretch fabric, and a collar with the under collar edge topstitched over the neckline seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for the hems

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • Collar – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • Placket – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. On the right side of the front, mark the slash line for the opening, the horizontal line marking the lower end of the opening, and two guide lines 1 cm from the center front on each side, which define the placket width. The finished placket width is 2 cm. Fold each placket in half lengthwise and place them along the slash line on the right side of the front, raw edges towards the slash line. Stitch the plackets along the marked guide lines with a 1 cm seam. Cut the front along the slash line, stopping 1 cm short of the end line, then clip diagonally into the corners up to the placket stitching lines. Turn the plackets to the right side, straighten and press. On the wrong side, turn under the seam allowance of each placket and stitch it in the ditch of the placket seam. Fold the small triangle at the lower end of the opening to the inside. On the wrong side, lay the right placket over the left and stitch them together, catching the triangle. Serge the lower ends of the plackets. Topstitch the lower end of the opening as shown in the drawing.
  2. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the back and front. Serge the seams and press them towards the back.
  3. Stitch the sleeve seams. Serge the seams and press.
  4. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches. Serge the seams and press.
  5. Fold the collar right sides together and stitch along the outer edges, turn right side out, and press. Stitch the upper collar to the neckline. Turn under the seam allowance of the under collar and topstitch it along the upper collar seam.
  6. Serge the bottom edge of the garment and the bottom edges of the sleeves. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
