Tech. Description

Cotton Stretch Jersey Raglan Sleeve Top

A women's hip-length top for knit fabric with short raglan sleeves and a wide round neckline. It is cut from only four pieces: front, back and two sleeves.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, with jeans, shorts or a skirt.
  • In spring and autumn under an open cardigan or jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, following the body through the waist and hips.

Length: Hip length, with a slightly curved hem.

Neckline: Wide round neckline, finished by folding the edge to the wrong side and topstitching, with no band or facing.

Sleeves: Short raglan sleeves sewn to the front and back along diagonal seams that run from the underarm to the neckline.

Back: One piece with no centre back seam.

Finishing: The sleeve seam and side seam are stitched in one continuous seam. Hem, sleeve hems and neckline are turned under and topstitched; a twin needle keeps the hems stretchy.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pieces, straight raglan seams, one continuous side and sleeve seam, and turned-and-topstitched edges. Basic experience with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and a twin needle is needed.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • A twin needle for topstitching the hems

Cutting Plan

From main fabric:

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Pattern pieces made from knit fabrics should be sewn with a special elastic stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch. When serging/overlocking, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Hem allowances should be topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Attach sleeve to front. Finish seam and press.
  2. Attach sleeve to back. Finish seam and press.
  3. Stitch the sleeve seam and side seam in one continuous seam. Finish seams and press.
  4. Finish the bottom edge of the garment, the bottom edge of the sleeves, and the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
