Tech. Description

Cotton Stretch Jersey Sleeveless Scoop Neck Side Drawstring Top

A women's sleeveless knit top cut from just a front and a back, with a round scoop neckline and a drawstring channel in each side seam. Pulling the drawstrings gathers the sides; the ends are tied at the hem.

When To Wear

  • Summer days with shorts, jeans or a skirt.
  • On holiday and at the beach, or under an open shirt or cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted; the sides can be gathered up with the drawstrings.

Length: Hip length, with a slightly curved hem.

Neckline: Round scoop, the edge overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, the shoulder line running slightly past the shoulder point; armholes turned and topstitched.

Waist: Each side seam is pressed open and the allowances topstitched 1 cm from the seam to form a channel. A drawstring is threaded through it, secured at the armhole end and left free at the hem, where it is tied.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and overlocked; hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pattern pieces, turned and topstitched edges and a drawstring channel made from the side seam allowances.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative ribbon for the drawstrings
  • Twin needle for the hems

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece

Tip: Sew knit pieces with a stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag. When overlocking, trim the seam allowances to 0.6–0.8 cm. Topstitch the hem allowances with a twin needle to keep them stretchy.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the shoulder seams of the back and front. Serge the seams and press towards the back.
  2. Serge the bottom edge of the garment and the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  3. Serge the side edges. Stitch the side seams and press open. Topstitch the seam allowances 1 cm from the seam to form a channel. Thread the drawstring through the channel and secure it at the armhole edge.
  4. Serge the armhole edge. Fold to the wrong side and topstitch.
