Tech. Description

Round Neck Top with Sleeve Options

A women's close-fitting knit top with a round neckline and set-in sleeves, shown in short, three-quarter and long lengths. Three pattern pieces: front, back and sleeve; all edges are turned and topstitched, with no facings or bands.

When To Wear

  • Everyday wear with jeans, trousers or skirts.
  • Under jackets and cardigans; long sleeves for the cooler months, short sleeves for summer.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, with side seams curving in slightly at the waist.

Length: Hip length, with a slightly curved hem.

Neckline: Round, the edge overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: Set-in sleeves; short, three-quarter and long lengths are shown, each with a topstitched hem.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, overlocked and pressed towards the back; hems topstitched with a twin needle so they keep their stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Shoulder and side seams, set-in sleeves and turned, topstitched edges; the only skill needed is sewing stretch fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for the neckline and hems

Cutting Plan

From main fabric:

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Sew knit pieces with a stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag. When overlocking, trim the seam allowances to 0.6–0.8 cm. Topstitch the hem allowances with a twin needle to keep them stretchy.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the back and front. Serge the seams and press towards the back.
  2. Stitch the sleeve seams. Serge the seams and press.
  3. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching notches. Serge the seams and press.
  4. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, the bottom edges of the sleeves, and the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
