Tech. Description

Off-Shoulder Wedding Dress with Front Slit and Contrast Underskirt

A floor-length women's wedding dress with an off-shoulder neckline edged by a two-layer decorative collar that crosses over at the front. Princess seams run from the bodice into a flared skirt, the left centre front overlaps the right, and a long slit in the left front princess seam shows the underskirt. Lined, with an invisible zip at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • Wedding ceremonies and receptions.
  • Worn over a tulle underskirt; clear bra straps can be added for support at the shoulders.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bodice and waist, flaring into a full skirt through the princess seams on the front and back.

Length: Floor length, the hem dropping lower at the back; hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Neckline: Off the shoulder. The decorative collar is cut in left front, right front and back sections, each made of two layers stitched together along the lower edge and turned out. It crosses over at the front, follows the asymmetric front edge and runs straight across the back, and is caught into the upper edge of the dress between the armholes.

Front: Asymmetric: separate left and right centre front and side front panels. The left centre front overlaps the right; a slit is left in the left front princess seam, faced with lining and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Back: Centre back seam with an invisible zip, princess seams pressed open.

Lining: Full lining cut on the same panel lines (one-piece centre front), attached at the armholes and upper edge and understitched 0.2 cm from the seam; lining hem turned up and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Asymmetric front panels with an overlap, a two-layer collar fixed into the upper edge, a lined slit, an invisible zip and a lining that finishes the armholes and neckline.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics of natural or blended fibres; tulle or net for the underskirt.

Sewing Instructions

Tip: For a better fit of the dress on the shoulders, you can use transparent bra straps.

  1. Serge, stitch, and press open the princess seams on the back.
  2. Place the decorative collar pieces in pairs, right sides together: Decorative Left Front Collar, Decorative Right Front Collar and Decorative Back Collar. Stitch the lower edge of the front collar and back collar. Separate the collar pieces. Stitch the side edges of the front collar and back collar, press seams open. Turn the collar right side out and press.
  3. Place the collar on the Center Left Front, matching the notches, and pin. Place the collar on the Center Right Front and pin. Serge the lower edge of the Center Left Front. Serge the joining area on the Center Right Front. Stitch the Center Left Front to the Center Right Front and remove the pins. Press the seam open.
  4. Serge, stitch, and press open the princess seams on the front, leaving a slit in the left princess seam.
  5. Serge, stitch, and press open the side seams of the dress.
  6. Stitch the corners of the Decorative Back Collar. Trim and turn the corners.
  7. Stitch the upper edge of the collar (the collar section from the armhole of the front to the armhole of the back) from notch to notch, clip the seam allowances and turn right side out.
  8. Serge the center back edge, stitch up to the notch for the zipper. Press the seam open, pressing the zipper opening allowances. Insert the zipper.
  9. Secure the collar to the upper edge of the back and front, leaving the armhole seam allowance of the front and back free.
  10. Stitch the lining pieces of the dress, leaving a slit in the left princess seam of the front, serge the seams and press towards the center of the front on the front and towards the center of the back on the back. Serge the lower edge of the lining, press to the wrong side and topstitch at a distance of 0.5 cm from the lower edge. Serge the center back edges of the lining and stitch up to the zipper notch. Press the seam open, pressing the zipper opening allowances. Stitch the lining to the dress along the armholes and the upper edge of the front and back; understitch the allowances to the lining 0.2 cm from the seam. Face the slit in the front princess seam with the lining and topstitch along the slit at a distance of 0.5 cm from the edge of the slit. Turn under the center back edges of the lining and stitch them to the dress seam allowances in the zipper area.
  11. Serge the lower edge of the dress, fold and topstitch at a distance of 0.5 cm from the lower edge.
  12. The underskirt of the dress can be made from tulle or purchased ready-made.
