Tech. Description

Batwing Sleeve Blouse with Tie Waist

A women's cropped chiffon blouse with batwing sleeves cut in one with the body, a faced V-neckline and a concealed zip at the centre back. The gathered lower edge is set into a narrow band whose ends pass through a slit in the left side seam and tie at the side; the sleeves are gathered into buttoned cuffs.

When To Wear

  • With high-waisted trousers or skirts for the office and evenings out.
  • Spring and summer; over a camisole when the chiffon is sheer.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and blousy through the body and sleeves, drawn in by the gathered band at the lower edge.

Length: Cropped, ending at the waist in the band.

Neckline: Shallow V-neckline with interfaced front and back facings, understitched 0.2 cm from the seam; centre front seam below the V.

Sleeves: Batwing sleeves cut in one with the front and back: the shoulder seam continues along the top of the arm and the side seam along the underarm. Each sleeve has a short vent at the lower end of the seam and is gathered into an interfaced cuff with one button.

Closure: Concealed zip in the centre back seam; the back facing is turned under and stitched to the zip.

Back: Cut in two with a centre back seam.

Waist: The lower edge is gathered into a band folded in half lengthwise, made of two pieces joined at one side; its long ends are stitched across, turned out and tied at the left side, passing through a slit in the left side seam topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge. The band can also be made as a separate tie belt.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Sewing chiffon, a concealed zip finished with a facing, gathered cuffs with vents and buttonholes, and a tie band stitched in the ditch.

Fabric Recommendations

Chiffon of natural or blended fibres.

  • Back Neckline Facing – 2 pieces
  • Waistband – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the cuffs and the front and back neckline facings.
  2. Overlock the center front and center back edges. Stitch the center front seam and press it open. Stitch the center back seam up to the zipper notch. Press the center back seam open, pressing the zipper opening allowances as well.
  3. Overlock and stitch the side seams together with the underarm sleeve seams, leaving a slit in the left side seam and a vent at the lower end of each sleeve seam. Press the side seams open and press the slit and vent allowances. Stitch and overlock the shoulder seams together with the upper sleeve seams. Press the shoulder seams towards the back.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams of the facings and press them open. Overlock the outer edge of the facings. Insert the zipper into the center back seam. Stitch the facing to the front and back neckline. Fold under the center back edges of the facing and stitch them to the zipper. Understitch the neckline seam allowance onto the facing 0.2 cm from the seam.
  5. Stitch the Waistband pieces together at the side seam. Press the seam open. Overlock the inner long edge of the waistband. Press the waistband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
  6. Run a line of loose (long) stitches 0.5 cm from the lower edge of the blouse. Gather the lower edge to fit the waistband for your size.
  7. Topstitch around the slit in the left side seam 0.5 cm from the edge. Stitch the waistband to the lower edge of the blouse. Stitch across the ends of the waistband (tie ends), trim the excess allowances and turn the ends right side out. Press the waistband and topstitch it in the ditch of the attachment seam.
  8. Overlock the inner edge of each cuff. Stitch the cuff ends. Trim the excess fabric at the corners and the excess allowances. Turn the cuff right side out and press.
  9. Run a line of loose stitches along the lower edge of the sleeve and gather. Stitch the outer layer of the cuff to the lower edge of the sleeve. Topstitch the cuff in the ditch of the attachment seam. Work a buttonhole on each cuff and sew on the buttons.

Tip: if desired, you can make the waistband as a separate tie belt, as shown in the design drawing.
