When To Wear

  • Evening events, theatre and dinners in autumn and winter.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped by princess seams from the armholes to the hem on the front and back.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Round, high neckline. Below it, a curved cutout from the right shoulder seam towards the bust: the upper front is cut double and stitched along the cutout and neckline, then turned; the lower front edge of the cutout is finished with an interfaced facing.

Sleeves: Long, one-piece set-in sleeves.

Front: Asymmetric: separate right and left side front pieces, a lower front and a double upper front joined to the lower front from a mark downwards. One front princess seam is left open at the hem as a vent, its top topstitched diagonally.

Back: Centre back seam and princess seams. An interfaced inner back yoke finishes the back neckline and shoulders, with the front shoulders sandwiched between yoke and back.

Closure: Invisible zipper in the centre back seam.

Finishing: Hems of the dress and sleeves turned up 3 cm and blind-stitched by hand.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A faced curved cutout with clipped curves, a self-lined upper front, a back yoke sewn by the sandwich method, a vent and an invisible zipper.

Fabric Recommendations

Crepe-back satin.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to one Upper Front piece, the Lower Front Facing and the Inner Back Yoke pieces.
  2. Serge the outer edge of the Lower Front Facing and the side edge of the inner Upper Front piece. Serge the lower edge of the Inner Back Yoke and the center back edges.
  3. Stitch the Upper Front to the Lower Front from the mark downwards. Press the seam allowances open and serge.
  4. Stitch the front princess seams (Lower Front to Side Right Front and Side Left Front), leaving the vent opening unstitched. Stitch the back princess seams (Middle Back to Side Back).
  5. Press the cut-on vent facing of the Lower Front to the wrong side along the fold line. Hem the long edge of the vent allowance on the side front as narrowly as possible. Topstitch the Lower Front diagonally at the top of the vent, catching the vent allowance.
  6. Stitch the center back seam, leaving the zipper opening unstitched. Press the seam allowances open and serge. Place the invisible zipper under the edges of the opening so that the teeth are not visible and stitch it in place.
  7. Face the cutout edge of the Lower Front with the Lower Front Facing, turn it to the wrong side and press.
  8. Place the two Upper Front pieces right sides together and stitch along the cutout and the neckline. Clip the seam allowances on the curves in several places. Turn right side out and press. Stitch the Lower Front Facing to the inner edge of the Upper Front, then treat the Upper Front pieces as one.
  9. Serge and stitch the side seams of the dress. Press the side seams open.
  10. Place the Inner Back Yoke on the back right sides together, sandwiching the shoulder edges of the front between them; stitch the shoulder seams and the back neckline. Turn the Inner Back Yoke to the wrong side.
  11. Stitch and serge the Sleeve seams and press. Set the Sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches.
  12. Press the hems of the sleeves and dress to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches.
