Tech. Description

Princess Seam Dress with Lace Sleeves

A fitted, below-the-knee women's dress with princess seams running from the sleeve seams to the hem on the front and back, and long two-piece raglan sleeves cut from stretch guipure. Round neckline with a small slit at the centre front, bound with a bias strip.

When To Wear

  • Evening events, receptions and celebrations.
  • Spring and autumn, with heels or ankle boots.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped by princess seams on the front and back, without a waist seam.

Length: Below the knee.

Neckline: Round, with a short U-shaped slit at the centre front; edge bound with a 4 cm bias strip.

Sleeves: Long raglan sleeves in two parts (front and back sleeve), cut from guipure on a knit base.

Front: One centre front piece and two side fronts; princess seams pressed towards the centre.

Back: Centre back seam, two centre back and two side back pieces.

Closure: Zipper in the centre back seam, set under the allowances so that the teeth are not visible.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; side seams pressed towards the back. Dress and sleeve hems overlocked, turned up 2 cm and topstitched. The author advises a narrow zigzag or stretch stitch on seams and a twin needle on hems to keep them stretchy.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Long princess seams, raglan sleeves in lace, a bias-bound neckline and a concealed zipper; stretch stitching on the guipure.

Sewing Instructions

Tip: To keep the fabric stretchy in the areas of finished seams, stitch the cut pieces with a narrow zigzag or special stretch stitch. To keep the bottom edge stretchy, overlock the hem allowance, then stitch it using a twin needle. The same applies to finishing other edges of the garment that should not lose elasticity. These recommendations do not apply to industrial production.

  1. Stitch and overlock the vertical princess seams on the front and back. Press the front princess seams towards the centre front and the back princess seams towards the centre back.
  2. Stitch the Front Sleeve and Back Sleeve together and overlock the sleeve seams.
  3. Stitch and overlock the side seams of the dress. Press the side seams towards the back.
  4. Stitch the sleeves into the armholes.
  5. Bind the neckline with the bias strip.
  6. Overlock the centre back edges. Stitch the centre back seam up to the zipper notch. Press the seam open, pressing back the zipper opening allowances. Place the zipper under the allowances so that the teeth are not visible, and stitch.
  7. Overlock, turn up and topstitch the hem of the dress and the sleeve hems.
