Silk Nightgown

A women's floor-length nightgown with a deep V-neck formed by the upper front, a shaped middle front panel under the bust and a wide flared skirt. The sleeves are cut in front and back halves and joined with the shoulder and side seams in one run.

When To Wear

• As sleepwear in any season, depending on the fabric.
• Under a matching robe at home.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bust, flaring from under the bust to a wide hem.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Deep V-neck; the neckline allowances are turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: Long, widening towards the hem, each made of a front and a back part; the overarm seam continues the shoulder seam and the underarm seam continues the side seam.

Front: Three sections: the upper front with darts, cut on the fold; a middle panel under the bust, cut on the fold, shown with embroidery in the drawing; the lower front in two parts with a centre seam.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam; the drawing shows a tie at the waist.

Finishing: Hem and sleeve hem allowances overlocked, turned under and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Darts, straight panel seams and sleeves joined flat before the side seams; no closures or facings.

Fabric Recommendations

Soft, light fabrics with good drape: silk charmeuse, silk satin, crepe de chine, viscose satin.
