Tech. Description

Slip Nightgown with Lace Insets

A women's long nightgown on thin straps, flaring from the bust to the hem, with two lace insets above the bust, a centre front seam on the lower front and a back panel gathered with elastic thread.

When To Wear

  • As a nightgown in spring and summer.
  • As a long slip under sheer or lightweight dresses.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close at the bust, widening into a flared skirt.

Length: Long, well below the knee.

Neckline: Straight upper edge at the back and sides; at the front a V-shaped centre panel between two shaped cup sections.

Front: Upper front in three parts: a centre panel cut on the fold and two side panels. Lace insets with scalloped edges are topstitched over the pressed edges with a 0.5 cm overlap. The upper front is joined to a lower front with a centre front seam.

Back: Centre back panel and two side backs joined by princess seams. The centre panel is shirred with elastic thread stitched on by zigzag and has an elastic casing along the top edge.

Straps: Narrow turned straps, sewn under the cup points at the front and under the back edge at the dart level, length set at the fitting.

Finishing: Upper edges and hem overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Lace insets topstitched over pressed edges, shirring with elastic thread, an elastic casing, princess seams, narrow turned straps.

Fabric Recommendations

Soft, fluid silk-type fabrics of natural and blended fibres, such as viscose poplin.

Additional Supplies

  • Lace strip with scalloped edges on both sides
  • Elastic tape
  • Elastic thread

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Centre back - 1 piece on fold
  • 2. Side back - 2 pieces
  • 3. Side upper front - 2 pieces
  • 4. Centre front - 1 piece on fold
  • 5. Lower front - 2 pieces
  • 6. Strap - 2 pieces
  • From lace:
  • Inset - 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center seam of the lower front.
  2. Overlock and press to the wrong side the seam allowances along the lace-inset attachment seams on the upper and centre front pieces. Topstitch the lace insets onto the front so their edges extend 0.5 cm beyond the pressed folds.
  3. Attach the upper front pieces to the lower front, right sides together.
  4. On the wrong side of the centre back, loosely lay elastic threads along the marked lines. Stitch over them with a zigzag stitch, without piercing the threads. Gather the fabric onto the elastic threads to create soft smocking, and secure the ends.
  5. Press the upper edge of the centre back to the wrong side and topstitch to form a casing. Thread elastic through the casing, gather, and secure the ends. Press the upper edges of the centre and side front panels and the side back panels to the wrong side and topstitch.
  6. Stitch the princess seams of the back and the side seams.
  7. Fold the straps in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long side. Turn right side out, baste, and press. Sew the front ends under the points of the cups. Try on the dress, adjust the strap length, and sew the back ends under the upper edge of the back at the level of the darts.
  8. Overlock the hem allowance, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
