Tech. Description

Panelled Cup Wide Strap Bra

A women's bra in woven fabric with two-part cups, a small centre front insert, wide doubled straps and a back band gathered on elastic and closed with a hook-and-eye fastening.

When To Wear

  • As everyday lingerie, sewn as a set with matching briefs or a slip.
  • Under tops and dresses with a wide neckline where the straps can show.

Key Design Features

Front: Each cup is made of a side panel and a front panel joined by a seam. The cups are self-lined: the front panel is folded to the wrong side and stitched along the upper, front and lower edges. A centre insert, stitched along its upper and lower edges and turned, joins the cups. The cups are topstitched 0.5 cm from the lower edge.

Straps: Wide, cut double, stitched along the long sides and one short side, turned and edge-stitched. They are caught into the cup edge at the front and sewn to the side band at the back after fitting.

Back: Side bands cut on the fold and stitched into a tube, with elastic threaded through to a marking so the band gathers near the fastening.

Closure: Ready-made hook-and-eye fastening at the centre back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Small, precise seams on curved cup panels, self-lined cups with the straps caught into the edge, elastic threaded into the band, a hook-and-eye fastening.

Fabric Recommendations

Firm silk-type fabrics of natural or synthetic fibres, such as satin.

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic tape
  • Ready-made hook-and-eye fastening

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:

  • 3. Cup Side – 4 pieces
  • 4. Cup Front – 2 pieces on fold

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fold straps in pairs, right sides together, and stitch along the long sides and one short side. Turn straps right side out, press, and topstitch along the edge.
  2. Stitch the side and front cup panels together. Fold the cup front to the wrong side and stitch along the upper, front, and lower edges, inserting the strap between the panels. Turn cups right side out, baste, and press.
  3. Fold the side panels in half lengthwise and stitch along the long side, turn right side out, and press. Attach the side panels to the cups.
  4. Fold the inserts right sides together and stitch the upper and lower sides. Turn the insert right side out and press. Attach the insert to the cups. Topstitch the cups along the lower side with a 0.5 cm seam.
  5. Insert elastic trim strip through the open edges of the side panels up to the marking, secure, and gather the fabric onto it. Attach the fastener details to the ends of the side panels.
  6. Try on the bra, adjust the length of the straps, and sew them to the side.
