Tech. Description

High-Waist Silk Briefs with Gathered Waistband

Women's high-waisted briefs made of four pieces, with centre front and centre back seams, an elastic casing formed by a cut-on facing at the waist, and short rounded slits at the sides of the leg openings.

When To Wear

  • As lingerie or as part of a satin sleep set.
  • Under a slip or nightdress, or at home with a camisole.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: High-waisted, full-coverage briefs with centre front, centre back and side seams.

Waist: Cut-on facing folded to the inside and stitched to form a casing; elastic equal to the waist circumference is threaded through an opening left in the centre back seam, gathering the waist.

Legs: Curved leg openings; the side seams are stitched only above a notch, leaving rounded side slits below.

Finishing: Leg openings and side slits turned under and topstitched; casing topstitched 0.1 cm from the fold.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pattern pieces, straight seams, an elastic casing and narrow hems; the slippery fabric is the main challenge.

Fabric Recommendations

Dense silk fabrics of natural or synthetic fibres; the sample is made in satin.

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic tape (length equal to the waist circumference)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back Half – 2 pieces
  • 2. Front Half – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Place each Front Half and Back Half right sides together and stitch the crotch (inseam) seam and the side seam above the cross notch (below it the side slit stays open). Press seam allowances open.
  2. Place the two halves inside each other, right sides together. Stitch the center front and back seam, leaving the back section above the fold line of the cut-on facing unstitched for threading the elastic.
  3. Press the cut-on facing to the wrong side, turn under the seam allowance, and topstitch 0.1 cm from the fold. Stitch along the marked line and thread elastic equal to the waist circumference through the casing.
  4. Fold the hem allowance of the leg openings and side slits to the wrong side, turn under, and topstitch.
