Wrap Front Pajama Romper with Ruffled Leg Openings

Pattern #5246
Tech. Description

Wrap Front Pajama Romper with Ruffled Leg Openings

A women's sewing pattern for a delicate one-piece lingerie pajama romper/sleepwear playsuit, featuring a softly shaped wrap-front bodice, fabric shoulder straps, an elasticated waist, and gathered contrast ruffles along the outer portions of the high-cut leg openings.

When To Wear

This lightweight one-piece pajama romper is designed as feminine intimate sleepwear, making it an ideal choice for:

  • Sleepwear: A lightweight and comfortable one-piece pajama for sleeping in soft, breathable fabrics.
  • Loungewear: Perfect for relaxed evenings and leisurely mornings at home.
  • Intimate Apparel: A delicate lingerie playsuit for romantic evenings or simply for enjoying beautifully made sleepwear.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A one-piece lingerie pajama romper combining a softly bloused camisole-style bodice with an integrated high-cut brief section. The garment is gently gathered at the natural waist for a relaxed yet feminine silhouette.

Front Bodice: Features a genuine surplice construction, with the right front overlapping the left to form a deep V-neckline. Each front half is constructed from separate center-front and side-front panels, creating princess-style shaping seams over the bust.

Neckline: The crossover V-neckline and upper edges are finished with separate contrast-fabric facings turned to the outside and topstitched to form visible decorative bands.

Back: The upper back is cut on the fold for a clean, seamless center back and is finished along the upper edge with the contrast facing.

Straps: Two narrow, flat fabric shoulder straps are attached to the upper front corners. Their length is adjusted during fitting before they are permanently secured to the back.

Waist: The bodice and integrated brief section are joined at the natural waist. The seam allowance forms a casing for elastic, softly gathering the garment and defining the waist without a separate waistband.

Brief Section: The integrated panty-style lower section features high-cut curved leg openings. The front and back have smooth center front and center back areas without vertical center seams.

Leg Openings: The high-cut leg openings are finished neatly with elastic applied under slight tension. The finished edges remain smooth and close to the body rather than visibly gathered or ruched.

Ruffles: Separate gathered contrast-fabric ruffles decorate the leg openings. The ruffles provide soft fullness and movement.

Crotch Closure: The lower section incorporates a discreet functional crotch opening secured with three small snap fasteners.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires confident handling of lightweight fabrics, accurate construction of the wrap bodice and its shaping seams, application of external facings, gathering ruffles, working with elastic, and constructing narrow fabric straps.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose lightweight fabrics made from natural or blended fibres, suitable for delicate sleepwear and lingerie:

  • Silk
  • Cotton batiste
  • Lightweight cotton blends
  • Fine cotton voile
  • Similar lightweight woven fabrics with a soft drape

Additional Supplies

  • Contrast fabric for the facings, shoulder straps, and leg ruffles
  • Elastic tape for the waist and leg openings
  • 3 small snap fasteners

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the upper center-front and side-front pieces together. Stitch the side seams of the front and back. Stitch the side seams of the facings.
  2. Place the right side of the facing against the wrong side of the upper garment and stitch. Turn the facing to the right side of the garment, turn under its raw edge, and topstitch close to the edge. Edge-stitch the upper edge at 0.1 cm.
  3. Overlap the right front over the left front, aligning the center-front lines, and baste the lower edges together.
  4. Stitch the side seams of the brief section. Press the straight edges of the ruffles to the wrong side, turn under, and topstitch. Gather the curved edges of the ruffles and baste them to the leg openings between the pattern markings.
  5. Turn the integrated facings of the lower sections to the wrong side, turn under, and press. Overlock the seam allowances of the leg openings, press them to the wrong side, and topstitch. Apply the elastic tape to the leg openings with a zigzag stitch, stretching it slightly as you sew so that the finished leg-opening edges lie smoothly against the body without visible gathering.
  6. Stitch the brief section to the upper section of the pajama romper. Press the seam allowance downwards and topstitch to form a casing. Thread elastic tape equal to the waist circumference through the casing.
  7. Fold each shoulder strap in half lengthwise with right sides together and stitch along the long edges. Turn the straps right side out, press, and edge-stitch. Sew the straps to the upper front corners. Try on the pajama romper, adjust the straps to the required length, and sew them to the back according to the pattern markings.
