Tech. Description

Knit Dress With Wrap Draping

A floor-length women's knit dress with a high pleated stand collar, long sleeves with pleated caps and a separate pleated drape laid over the centre front. Princess seams front and back, a centre back zip and a slit at the front left panel.

When To Wear

  • Evening events and formal dinners in the cooler months: long sleeves and a high neck cover the arms and throat.
  • On its own, with heeled shoes; the slit in the front left panel gives room to walk.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through the body, shaped by princess seams on the front and back, with a straight narrow skirt.

Length: Floor length.

Collar: High stand collar in two parts: the upper stand has pleats laid and basted along it, and the lower stand is turned under and stitched into the neckline seam.

Sleeves: Long, narrow set-in sleeves with pleats laid along the sleeve cap, giving raised folds at the shoulder; the cap seam allowance is trimmed to 1 cm.

Front: Asymmetric. The centre front is joined to the side right front by a princess seam and to the side left front by a second princess seam. A separate drape with hemmed upper and lower edges is pleated to the markings and basted onto the centre front, running diagonally from the shoulder across the body.

Closure: Zip in the centre back seam; the seam is stitched from the mark downwards and the zip is set under the pressed folds.

Back: Centre back cut in two pieces, with princess seams to the side right and side left back pieces.

Skirt: Slit along the edge of the side left front, with the slit allowance pressed to the wrong side and blind-stitched.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; sleeve hems turned up; dress hem and slit edges blind-stitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. An asymmetric front with separate left and right side pieces, a pleated drape basted to the front, a two-part pleated stand collar, pleated sleeve caps and a zip in a knit.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the right princess seam of the front (Center Front to Side Right Front).
  2. Finish the upper and lower edges of the Draping with a turned-up hem. Lay the pleats according to the markings. Place the Draping on the Center Front, wrong side of the Draping to right side of the front, and baste along the edges.
  3. Stitch the center back seam from the mark downwards, the princess seams of the back and the left princess seam of the front, the shoulder seams and the side seams. Overlock the seams.
  4. Lay and baste the pleats on the Upper Stand Collar. Place the Upper Stand Collar and Lower Stand Front right sides together and stitch along the upper edge. Turn right side out, baste and press. Place the lower edge of the Upper Stand Collar on the dress neckline, right sides together, and stitch. Turn under the lower edge of the Lower Stand Front and topstitch it in the attachment seam.
  5. Press the zipper allowances to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the folds and stitch, turning under the upper ends of the tape.
  6. Lay and baste pleats along the sleeve cap. Trim the seam allowance along the sleeve cap to 1 cm. Stitch the sleeve seams. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Finish the sleeve hems with a turned-up hem.
  7. Press the slit allowance of the Side Left Front and all hem allowances of the dress to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches.
