Tech. Description

Halter-Neck Evening Gown with Flared Skirt and Back-Long Hem

A long women's evening dress with a straight-cut darted bodice, a raised waist seam and a skirt that flares toward a hem longer at the back. Made in two layers, large-print floral chiffon over crepe satin, with rhinestone trim halter straps tied behind the neck and a zip in the centre back.

When To Wear

  • Evening events, formal receptions and summer weddings as a guest.
  • Warm weather: the bare shoulders and back suit outdoor evening events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice and a skirt close through the hips that widens toward the hem.

Length: Floor length, with the hem dipping lower at the back into a short train.

Neckline: Straight upper edge across the front and back, edged with rhinestone trim; two straps of the same trim are sewn to the front at the markings and tied at the back of the neck.

Sleeves: Sleeveless.

Front: Bodice front cut on the fold, shaped with darts; front skirt cut on the fold.

Closure: Zip in the upper part of the centre back seam, set so that the teeth are not visible.

Back: Darted back bodice in two pieces and a back skirt in two pieces, joined by a centre back seam.

Waist: Raised waist seam joining bodice and skirt, pressed upward.

Finishing: Upper edges and armholes stabilised with 2 cm interfacing strips; the chiffon layer turned over the upper edge of the crepe satin; 1 cm turned hem.

Lining: No separate lining. The bodice is made as two layers (chiffon and crepe satin with darts sewn separately) joined along the upper edge; the chiffon skirt panels are laid over the crepe satin ones and handled as one layer.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Handling slippery chiffon over crepe satin, a two-layer bodice joined at the upper edge, a zip set into layered fabric and trim straps attached to markings.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front and Back in both the crepe satin and the chiffon. Stitch the side seams. Place the chiffon bodice on the crepe satin bodice, right side of the chiffon to the wrong side of the crepe satin, and stitch along the upper edge. Trim the seam allowances and turn so that the wrong side of the chiffon lies on the right side of the crepe satin. Baste the layers together along the lower edge.
  2. Lay the chiffon Back Skirt and Front Skirt pieces over the crepe satin ones and treat them as single-layer pieces from here on. Stitch the side seams and the center back seam, leaving the top of the center back seam open for the zipper.
  3. Stitch the skirt to the bodice, right sides together. Press the seam allowances upward.
  4. Press the seam allowances of the zipper opening to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the edges of the opening and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
  5. Finish the hem with a 1 cm turned hem. Cut 2 Straps from the decorative trim. Sew their front ends to the Front at the markings. Also sew the trim along the upper edge of the dress.
