LONG TUNIC
Fabric & Materials
FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS: lightweight silk or viscose fabrics.
YOU WILL NEED: silk fabric with an openwork pattern, 150 cm wide; crepe-satin for facings, 140 cm wide; fusible interfacing; 1 button.
Cutting Plan
- From main fabric:
- Front - 2 pieces
- Back - 2 pieces
- Sleeve - 2 pieces
- From contrast fabric:
- Back neckline facing - 2 pieces
- Front facing - 2 pieces
- Sleeve facing – 2 pieces
- From INTERFACING: fuse the facings.
Sewing Instructions
- Stitch the front center seam, folding the front pieces wrong sides together and leaving the slit open at the bottom.
- Stitch the back center seam, folding the back pieces right sides together and leaving the slit open at the top.
- Press seam allowances open; press the back slit allowances to the wrong side.
- Stitch darts and shoulder seams.
- Stitch shoulder seams of back neckline facing and front facing, folding them right sides together, and the front center seam, leaving the slit open.
- Press the allowances of the inner edges of the facing to the wrong side, clipping them at the corners.
- Attach the neckline facing right side to the wrong side of the neckline edge.
- From the contrast fabric, cut a bias strip 5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, and neatly stitch it into a narrow rouleau loop.
- Fold the rouleau into a loop the size of the button and baste it to the left edge of the back slit.
- Clip the seam allowance of the facing attachment at several places on the curves.
- Turn the facings to the right side and stitch them to the front edges of the slit.
- Baste the neckline and center front facing to the tunic and topstitch along the edge, catching the loop.
- Press the upper allowances of the sleeve facings to the wrong side.
- With right sides together, attach the facings from the wrong side of the sleeve to the hem allowances, turn to the right side, and topstitch onto the sleeves.
- Set sleeves into armholes.
- Stitch side seams and sleeve seams in one continuous seam.
- Press the hem allowance to the wrong side, turn under, and topstitch.
- Sew the button to the right side of the back slit so that the edges of the slit meet.
