Flared Trousers with Front Seam Slits

Full-length women's flared trousers without a waistband. A vertical seam runs from the waist down the middle of each front leg and is left open below the knee as a slit to the hem; the waist is finished with interfaced facings and the trousers close with a front zip fly.

When To Wear

  • To the office with blouses, fine knits and jackets.
  • For dinners and evenings out with heeled shoes, the slits opening as you walk.
  • In spring, summer and autumn in lighter suiting.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close through the hip, flaring from the knee to the hem.

Front: Each front leg is cut in two parts, an inner front and a side front panel, joined by a vertical seam stitched down to the slit mark and pressed open; below the mark the seam stays open as a slit.

Closure: Front zip fly, 22 cm zipper, with cut-on fly facings and a fly shield.

Back: One piece per leg with waist darts, dart depths pressed toward the centre.

Waist: No waistband. The top edge is finished with interfaced front and back facings joined at the side seams, understitched, turned in and hand-sewn to the zipper tape and tacked to the seam allowances and darts.

Finishing: Side seams, inseams and crotch seam pressed open; hem turned up and sewn.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A zip fly with fly shield, a faced waist edge with no waistband, and seams that end at a slit mark.

Fabric Recommendations

Natural or blended suiting fabrics.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Back Facing and Front Facings.
  2. Stitch the darts, press dart depths towards the center.
  3. Stitch the Inner Front Half to the Side Front Panel down to the slit mark. Press seam allowances open.
  4. Stitch the side seams. Stitch the inseams. Press seam allowances open. Stitch the front and back crotch seam in one go, leaving the zipper section open. Press seam allowances open from the top to the start of the curve.
  5. Zipper closure: press the cut-on zipper facings to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the folded edge of the left side and edgestitch. Stitch the free zipper tape to the cut-on facing of the right side. Fold the Button Catch (fly shield) in half lengthwise and stitch across the upper and lower short ends; turn out.
