Tech. Description

A-Line V-Hem Skirt

A women's A-line skirt in light draping fabric, with a V-shaped hem that drops to a point at the centre front and centre back. The waist is finished with a facing instead of a waistband, and the zipper sits in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, with a tucked-in blouse, a fitted T-shirt or a short knit top.
  • For holidays and warm evenings, when made in georgette or soft crepe.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, fitted at the waist and flaring towards the hem, with soft folds falling from the hips.

Waist: No waistband. The upper edge is finished with a front and back facing, understitched and sewn by hand to the zipper tapes and side seam allowances.

Closure: Zipper in the left side seam, set so the teeth are not visible.

Skirt: One front and one back panel, each cut on the fold, so there are no centre front or centre back seams. The hem forms a point at the centre front and at the centre back.

Finishing: The hem is finished with a dense narrow zigzag stitch sewn along the pressed fold while slightly stretching it; the excess allowance is then trimmed close to the stitching, which gives a light wavy edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two side seams, a faced waist and a side zipper; the only special technique is the narrow zigzag hem on a light fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Light, softly draping fabrics; the sample is made in crepe georgette.

Additional Supplies

  • Zipper

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front Skirt – 1 piece on fold
  • Back Skirt – 1 piece on fold
  • Front Facing – 1 piece on fold
  • Back Facing – 1 piece on fold

Sewing Instructions

  1. Sew the left side seam below the slit mark for the zipper closure. Press seam allowances open. Press seam allowances along the edges of the slit to the wrong side.
  2. Stitch the zipper so that the teeth are not visible.
  3. Sew the right side seam of the skirt, and also of the facings.
  4. Place the joined Front Facing and Back Facing on the skirt right sides together and stitch to the upper edge of the skirt along the marked seam line. Trim seam allowances to 0.5 cm width. Turn the facing up and topstitch onto the seam allowances close to the seam. Turn under the ends of the facing. Turn the facing to the wrong side and sew to the zipper tapes and the seam allowances of the side seams.
  5. Finish the lower edge of the skirt with a dense narrow zigzag stitch: press the seam allowance along the edge to the wrong side, from the right side stitch a dense narrow zigzag stitch along the fold, slightly stretching the fold, and then from the wrong side carefully trim the excess seam allowance close to the stitching.
