Tech. Description

Straight Skirt

A knee-length women's straight skirt on a waistband, with an off-centre vertical seam on the front that opens into a slit at the hem, floral embroidery in the lower corner of the right front panel, and a centre back zipper above a back slit.

When To Wear

  • To the office with blouses, knit tops and jackets.
  • In spring and autumn with tights and low-heeled shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, close-fitting through the hip, length to the knee.

Front: Two unequal front panels joined by a vertical seam placed off centre, stitched down to the slit mark; the slit edges are finished separately and hand-sewn to the hem allowance. Waist darts.

Embroidery: A floral motif near the hem of the right front panel. The panel is cut with larger seam allowances, the design is transferred with carbon paper and embroidered, then the piece is cut to the pattern.

Back: Two back pieces with waist darts and a centre back seam, with a zipper at the top and a slit at the hem.

Closure: Centre back zipper stitched under the seam edges so the teeth are hidden; the waistband fastens with one buttonhole and button.

Waist: Straight interfaced waistband, topstitched from the right side into the attachment seam.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Two slits, a centre back zipper with hidden teeth, a waistband, and embroidery worked on the front panel before final cutting.

Fabric Recommendations

Suiting fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • 1 zipper
  • 1 button
  • Fusible interfacing (waistband)
  • Carbon (transfer) paper for the embroidery design

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Right Front Panel – 1 piece
  • Left Front Skirt – 1 piece
  • Back Skirt – 2 pieces
  • Waistband – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing: reinforce the Waistband.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Embroidery: Cut the Right Front Panel with slightly larger seam allowances. Using transfer paper, transfer the embroidery design onto the fabric and complete it. Place the pattern piece on the embroidered fabric and refine the cut.
  2. Reinforce the waistband with fusible interfacing. (Fusible interfacings are pressed onto the wrong side of the piece with a hot iron).
  3. Stitch the center back seam between the slit markings. Press the edges of the slits.
  4. Stitch the zipper under the edges of the upper slit so that the teeth are not visible.
  5. Stitch the darts.
  6. Stitch the front panel seam (Right Front Panel to Left Front Skirt) down to the slit marking. Finish the edges of the slit separately and press.
  7. Stitch the side seams.
  8. Fold the waistband right sides together with the upper edge of the skirt and stitch, leaving an extension for the fastener on the right back edge of the waistband. Finish the ends of the waistband. Turn under the inner edges of the waistband and topstitch from the right side into the attachment seam. On the left end of the waistband, make a buttonhole; on the right, sew on a button.
  9. Hem the skirt. Hand-stitch the slit allowances to the hem allowance.
