Tech. Description

Two Layered Flared Skirt

A charming women's sewing pattern for a chic two-layered flared skirt, distinguished by its playful volume and a softly flared upper layer over a slightly longer under layer.

When To Wear

This skirt's elegant flair and light construction make it perfect for various warm-weather occasions:

  • Summer Events & Garden Parties: Its light fabric and flowy design are ideal for daytime outdoor gatherings.
  • Resort & Vacation Wear: Pairs beautifully with casual tops for stylish holiday ensembles.
  • Semi-Formal Gatherings: Can be dressed up with an elegant top for refined social occasions.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: An A-line flared silhouette with a dynamic, flowy drape, composed of two four-panel layers.

Waist: A straight waistband sitting at the natural waist for a flattering fit.

Length: Short length, falling above the knee.

Hem: Narrow topstitched hems on both the under and upper layers.

Closure: A zipper in the center back seam, secured with a button and buttonhole on the waistband.

Layers: The Upper Skirt is laid over the Skirt and both are joined at the waistband, so the two flared hems move independently, adding depth and movement.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Involves precise assembly of two skirt layers, waistband application, zipper insertion, and a buttonhole.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose light, drapey fabrics that will enhance the flared silhouette and layered effect:

  • Lightweight natural or blended fabrics
  • Silk fabric

Additional Supplies

  • 1 zipper, 20 cm
  • 1 button
  • Fusible interfacing (for the waistband)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Skirt – 4 pieces
  • Upper Skirt – 4 pieces
  • Waistband – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing: Waistband.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the Waistband with fusible interfacing (fusible interfacing is pressed onto the wrong side of the piece with a hot iron).
  2. On the skirt panels, stitch the center back seam below the zipper opening mark. Stitch the center front seam and the side seams. Press the seam allowances open; press the seam allowances along the zipper opening to the wrong side.
  3. Baste the zipper to the opening seam allowances at the center back, then stitch it from the right side 0.5 cm from the edge.
  4. Place the Upper Skirt over the Skirt, wrong side of the Upper Skirt to the right side of the Skirt, and baste them together along the upper edges.
  5. Pin the Waistband to the upper edge of the skirt, right sides together, and stitch. Press the seam allowances toward the Waistband. Fold the Waistband in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the ends. Turn the Waistband right side out, turn under the inner edge and pin it so that it overlaps the attachment seam by about 2 mm. From the right side, stitch in the ditch of the waistband attachment seam, catching the inner edge.
  6. Work a buttonhole on the left end of the Waistband and sew a button on the right end.
  7. Turn the hem allowances of the Skirt and the Upper Skirt to the wrong side, turn under the raw edges and topstitch 0.5 cm from the edge.
