Tech. Description

Long Sleeve Polo Dress

A women's mid-calf dress with a polo neckline: a folded collar and an overlapping front placket, the right placket laid over the left. Bust darts, long set-in sleeves and twin-needle hems.

When To Wear

  • As an everyday dress in autumn, winter and spring, with flat shoes or boots.
  • Under a cardigan or a jacket for work.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body, shaped by bust darts, straight to the hem.

Length: Mid-calf.

Collar: One-piece collar cut on the fold, its ends meeting the placket seams.

Front: Cut in one piece on the fold, with a neck opening finished by two placket facings; the corner of the opening is reinforced with interfacing. The right placket overlaps the left and the lower ends are stitched together.

Sleeves: Long one-piece set-in sleeves, sleeve and side seams sewn in one.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Placket facings topstitched to the front along the placket seam; dress and sleeve hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Few pieces; the only detailed step is the placket with the collar set between its layers.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-weight fabrics with a soft drape: cotton or viscose jersey, ponte, fine wool jersey, or a soft woven such as viscose crepe.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (placket facings and a small strip for the corner of the neck opening)
  • Twin needle for the hems

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front - 1 piece on fold
  • Back - 1 piece on fold
  • Collar - 1 piece on fold
  • Placket Facing - 2 pieces
  • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Placket Facing - 2 pieces
  • A small strip to reinforce the corner of the front neckline opening

Sewing Instructions

  1. Sew the bust darts and the shoulder seams.
  2. Set the sleeves into the armholes.
  3. Sew the sleeve seams and side seams in one continuous seam.
  4. Front placket and collar: reinforce the corner of the front neckline opening on the wrong side with a strip of interfacing.
  5. Sew the placket facings to the front along their long edges. Clip the front seam allowance diagonally to the end of the stitching. Press the seam allowances open.
  6. Fold the collar along the fold line, right sides together, and stitch the short ends; turn out.
  7. Baste the raw edges of the collar together and sew them into the neckline so that the collar ends land exactly on the placket seams.
  8. Fold each placket facing along its fold line, right sides together, so that its facing part lies over the collar.
  9. Stitch the facing part to the neckline and stitch the short upper ends of the plackets.
  10. Turn the facing part to the wrong side and topstitch it to the front along the placket seam.
  11. Tack the upper ends of the facings to the shoulder seam allowances.
  12. Lay the right placket over the left, matching the center lines.
  13. From the wrong side, stitch the front and the lower ends of the plackets together.
  14. Press the hem allowances of the dress and sleeves to the wrong side and topstitch with a twin needle.
