Tech. Description

Long Skirt with Front Slit

A women's ankle-length skirt with a slightly flared, A-line shape, a centre front seam that opens into a long slit, and a faced waist with no waistband. The centre front seam, slit edges and hem are topstitched with a twin needle in one continuous line.

When To Wear

  • For the office and everyday wear, with blouses, fine knit tops and jackets.
  • In spring and autumn, with tights and boots or with low-heeled shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the waist and hips, slightly widening to the hem; one dart on each front and each back piece.

Length: Ankle length.

Waist: No waistband; the top edge is finished with a front facing cut on the fold and two back facings, interfaced, understitched and tacked to the darts and seam allowances.

Front: Two front panels joined by a centre front seam, left open at the bottom as a slit; the slit allowances are pressed to the wrong side and the hem corners are mitred.

Back: Two back panels with a centre back seam and a concealed zipper at the top.

Finishing: Twin-needle topstitching 3 cm from the edge along the centre front seam, the slit edges and the hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Darts, straight seams, a concealed zipper, a waist facing and a mitred slit corner; the continuous twin-needle topstitching needs care.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-weight fabrics that hold topstitching: crepe, suiting, gabardine, linen blends, denim or twill.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front and back facings)
  • Concealed zipper for the centre back seam
  • Twin needle for topstitching

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front Skirt - 2 pieces
  • Back Skirt - 2 pieces
  • Front Facing - 1 piece on fold
  • Back Facing - 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing: Front Facing and Back Facing pieces.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Sew the darts and press them towards the center lines.
  2. Sew the center front seam, leaving the slit open at the bottom. Press the seam allowances open and press the slit allowances to the wrong side.
  3. Sew the center back seam, leaving the zipper opening at the top.
  4. Sew the side seams.
  5. Sew in the concealed zipper.
  6. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side, mitring the front corners. With a twin needle, topstitch along the center front seam and, continuing the same line of stitching, along the slit edges and the hem, 3 cm from the edge.
  7. Sew the side seams of the facings. Place the facing on the skirt right sides together and stitch to the upper edge of the skirt. Trim the seam allowances close to the stitching, press them towards the facing and understitch. Turn the facing to the wrong side and tack it to the darts and seam allowances. Turn under the ends of the facing and sew them to the zipper tapes.
