Front: Centre front panels running from shoulder to hem, joined to the side front panels; the seam is topstitched from the right side.

Pockets: In-seam pockets in the seam between the centre front and side front, with lining pocket bags and a two-layer flap stitched to the lower edge of the side front, pointing up and pressed down.

Back: Middle back cut on the fold, joined to the side back panels by topstitched panel seams.

Finishing: Front edges and collar stitched with the facings and turned; facings stitched to the hem allowance; interfaced hem allowances; shoulder pads.

Lining: Full lining, sewn to the inner edges of the front facings and back neck facing and hemmed separately.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Sleeves cut in one with the panels, in-seam pockets with flaps worked into a corner seam, a collar set between coat and facings, a full lining.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Sew the panel seams joining the middle back to the side backs. Topstitch along the middle back from the right side.
  2. Clean-finish the pocket openings on the center fronts with the pocket bags, first clipping the center front seam allowances diagonally at the corners. Place two pocket flap pieces together, stitch and turn out. Baste the flap, pointing upwards, to the lower edge of the side front. Stitch on the pocket bag and the flap; press the flap down and the seam allowances up. Sew the center front to the side front and, continuing the same line of stitching, sew the pocket bags together. Topstitch along the center front from the right side. Baste the side edges of the pocket bags to the center fronts.
  3. Sew the shoulder seams and upper sleeve seams.
  4. Sew the under collar into the neckline of the back and fronts. Sew the shoulder seams of the center front facings and the back neckline facing. Sew the upper collar into the neckline of the facings.
  5. Place the center front facings on the fronts right sides together and pin along the front edges; pin the edges of the upper and under collar together. Stitch along the front edges and collar, then turn out. Stitch together the pressed-open seam allowances of the under collar seam and the back neckline facing seam.
  6. Sew the side seams and underarm sleeve seams. Hem the coat. Sew the center front facings to the hem allowance.
  7. Hem the sleeves.
  8. Attach the shoulder pads.
  9. Sew the lining pieces together. Sew the lining to the inner edges of the center front facings and the back neckline facing. Hem the lining.
  10. Make buttonholes on the right front.
