Drawstring Peplum Blouse

A women's blouse in woven fabric with long set-in sleeves, a round bias-bound neckline with a centre front slit and a drawstring casing at the waist seam. Below the drawstring the lower part flares into a peplum.

When To Wear

  • In spring and autumn with slim trousers, jeans or leggings.
  • At the office with a straight skirt, the cord tied at the front.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight upper body, drawn in at the waist by a cord, flared lower part.

Length: Below the hip, curved hem.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with a folded 4 cm bias binding turned to the inside and topstitched.

Front: Upper front in two pieces with a centre front seam below the slit; the slit is edged with narrow cut-on plackets, folded under and topstitched from the right side. Lower front cut on the fold.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves with a 5 cm hem allowance, turned 1 cm and then 4 cm and topstitched.

Back: Upper back and lower back, each cut on the fold.

Waist: A casing ring is stitched inside the lower part, and a fold of the upper part is topstitched over the waist seam. The cord comes out through two buttonholes at the front and ties in a bow.

Finishing: 1.5 cm hem allowance, serged, turned and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Cut-on slit plackets, a bias-bound neckline, a casing sewn into the waist seam with a topstitched fold, buttonholes for the cord and set-in sleeves.

Fabric Recommendations

Firm blouse fabrics in natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative cord
  • Bias binding 4 cm wide, neckline length plus 5 cm (or cut from the main fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 1.5 cm. Sleeve hem allowance – 5.0 cm. Other allowances – 1.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Upper Front – 2 pieces
    • Lower Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Casing – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Place the Upper Front pieces right sides together and stitch the center front seam from the slit mark to the bottom. Fold the cut-on plackets apart, one to each side, and press. Fold under the placket allowances and topstitch from the right side.
  2. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the Upper Front and Upper Back. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  3. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the neckline length + 5cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding on the neckline on the right side, raw edges matching, and stitch. Clip allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  4. Stitch the side seams of the Lower Front and Lower Back. Overlock allowances and press towards the back. Work the buttonholes for the cord at the marks.
  5. Stitch the Casing into a loop. Place it on the wrong side of the lower blouse and secure along the upper edge. Turn under the lower edge of the casing and topstitch it to the lower blouse. Join the upper and lower parts of the blouse. Overlock the seam. Press the fold on the upper part along the marked line and topstitch the upper part from the right side over the joining seam, securing the fold (this forms the casing channel).
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam. Overlock allowance and press towards the back of the sleeve. Set in sleeves into armholes. Overlock allowances and press towards the sleeve.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch. Turn the sleeve hem allowance under by 1 cm and press, then by 4 cm and topstitch.
  8. Thread the cord through the casing.
