Tech. Description

Cold Shoulder Ruffle Blouse

A women's hip-length sleeveless blouse with cut-out shoulders, a two-tier flounce stitched around the front and back at armhole level, and a back neck slit closed with one button and a loop.

When To Wear

  • In summer with shorts, jeans or a straight skirt.
  • On holiday and for daytime outings in warm weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight cut with bust darts pressed upwards.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Round neckline, finished together with the armholes by a one-piece front facing and back facing.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with deep armholes that leave the shoulders bare and narrow straps at the shoulder line.

Closure: Slit at the centre back neckline, faced 0.1–0.2 cm from the cut, closed with one button and a thread loop or elastic cord loop set into the facing seam.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Two-tier flounce: smaller and bigger tiers, each with side seams placed so the tiers' seams do not line up, lower edges finished with a narrow rolled hem (or bias binding), basted together and stitched to the blouse along the markings; at armhole level the flounce is folded down and topstitched. Hem allowance 2 cm, turned and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. All-in-one neck and armhole facing sewn in two stages, a faced back slit with a loop, narrow rolled hems and a layered flounce stitched onto the body.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin blouse fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front and back facings)
  • 1 button
  • Elastic cord for the loop (optional, instead of a thread loop)
  • Bias binding for the flounce edges (optional)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Seam allowance for the lower edge of the flounces – 0 cm. Hem allowance for the bottom of the garment – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Front Facing and Back Facing.
  2. Stitch bust darts on the front. Press dart depths upwards.
  3. Stitch shoulder and side seams of the blouse. Press seams towards the back and serge.
  4. Make a thread loop for the button, or use a piece of elastic cord.
  5. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the Front Facing and Back Facing. Press seams open. Serge the outer edge. Place facing right side down on the neckline, aligning edges. Cut the back neckline slit at the mark. Stitch around the neckline, inserting the loop; stitch the slit 0.1-0.2 cm from the cut. Clip allowances, turn facing to the wrong side and press the neckline.
  6. Finish the armholes with the facing in two stages: first the front armhole, then the back armhole.
  7. Stitch the side seams of the flounces (Smaller Front Flounce to Smaller Back Flounce, Bigger Front Flounce to Bigger Back Flounce). Serge the allowances. Finish the lower edges with a narrow rolled hem. Place the smaller flounce on top of the bigger flounce and baste along the upper edge (the side seams of the two tiers should not line up). Serge the upper edge. Place the flounce on the garment right side down, with the lower edges pointing upwards.
  8. Stitch the flounce along the markings. At armhole level, fold the flounce down and topstitch the allowance through the flounce.
  9. Press the bottom of the garment to the wrong side, fold and topstitch.
  10. Sew a button on the back.

Tip: The lower edge of the flounces can be finished with bias binding.
