Tech. Description

Two-Tone Panel Dress

A fitted women's knit dress with raglan sleeves and princess seams on the front and back, cut in two colours of knit: the centre panels and sleeves in one, the side panels, neckband and cuffs in the other.

When To Wear

  • For the office and everyday wear in autumn and spring, with tights and low shoes or ankle boots.
  • Under a cardigan or a short jacket on cooler days.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped by princess seams; straight hem at about knee length.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with a double-layer band in the second fabric: two rings stitched together along the inner edge, turned and attached to the neckline.

Sleeves: Raglan sleeves, finished with a cuff folded in half lengthwise in the second fabric; side seam and underarm seam are sewn in one.

Front: Centre front cut on the fold; the princess seams start in the raglan seams, angle in towards the bust and run down to the hem.

Back: Centre back seam and princess seams from the raglan seams to the hem.

Closure: None; no zipper or buttons.

Finishing: Seams sewn on a straight-stitch machine and serged; hem topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to keep it stretchy.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight seams in knit fabric, raglan sleeves, a folded cuff and a double neckband. The main care point is matching the panel seams at the notches.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabric in two colours, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Second knit fabric in a contrast colour (side panels, neckband, cuffs)
  • Twin needle for the hem, or a coverstitch machine

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance for the dress bottom – 2.0 cm. Other allowances – 0.7 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric 1:
    • Center Back – 2 pieces
    • Center Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • From main fabric 2:
    • Side Back – 2 pieces
    • Side Front – 2 pieces
    • Facing (neckband) – 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces

Note: Knit fabric pieces in this model are stitched on a straight stitch machine. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the Side Backs to the Center Backs and the Side Fronts to the Center Front (princess seams). Press the allowances towards the side seams and serge.
  2. Stitch and serge the center back seam. Press allowances to the left side.
  3. Stitch the Sleeves to the front and back along the raglan seams. Serge the allowances.
  4. Stitch the side seams and underarm sleeve seams in one continuous seam.
  5. Stitch each Cuff into a ring. Fold it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and stitch it to the sleeve hem. Serge the allowance.
  6. Stitch each Facing into a ring. Place the two rings right sides together and stitch along the inner edge. Turn right side out and stitch the band to the neckline.
  7. Serge the hem allowance of the dress bottom, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
