Tech. Description

Asymmetrical Panel Sheath Dress

A fitted, knee-length women's sheath dress in stretch woven fabric, with a front made of diagonal panels joined by seams with decorative piping and set with bands of stretch lace, and short lace cap sleeves. Darted back with a centre back seam.

When To Wear

  • For dinners, parties and celebrations in spring and summer.
  • At the office with a jacket over it.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting sheath; the front is shaped by the panel seams and a dart in front piece 2, the back by darts.

Length: Knee length.

Neckline: Round, finished with a folded bias binding topstitched along the fold.

Sleeves: Short cap sleeves cut from stretch lace, with no hem allowance at the lower edge; the lower armhole is finished with bias binding.

Front: Five diagonal panels and a lower front piece; lace strips cut to the markings are laid on the panels along their open edges, and decorative piping is inserted into the panel seams.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam and darts.

Closure: Pull-on; if the fabric is not stretchy enough, a zipper is inserted into the centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; 2 cm hem overlocked and hemmed with blind stitches.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Matching angled panel seams with piping inserted, applying lace to the panels, lace sleeves and bias-bound edges.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics in natural or blended fibres with added elastane.

Additional Supplies

  • Stretch lace, 10 cm wide (front panels)
  • Stretch lace for the sleeves, wide enough for the sleeve pattern piece
  • Decorative piping (approximate length marked on the upper front pattern piece)
  • Bias binding
  • Zipper (only if the fabric is not stretchy enough)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: dress hem allowance – 2 cm, sleeve hem allowance – 0 cm, all other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). Attention! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side.

  • From main fabric:
    • Front piece 1 - 1 piece
    • Front piece 2 - 1 piece
    • Front piece 3 - 1 piece
    • Front piece 4 - 1 piece
    • Front piece 5 – 1 piece
    • Lower front piece - 1 piece
    • Back piece – 2 pieces
  • From lace:
    • Sleeve - 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch darts on the back. Press seam allowances towards the center. Stitch and overlock the center back seam. Press seam allowance to the left side. (If the material is not elastic enough, insert a zipper into the center back seam).
  2. Stitch dart on front piece 2. Press seam allowance upwards.
  3. Cut lace according to the markings on the front piece. Secure lace to the front pieces along the open edges.
  4. Stitch and overlock the front princess seams, starting from the bottom, inserting decorative piping between the pieces. Press seams upwards and overlock.
  5. Stitch the right shoulder seam. Overlock seam allowance and press towards the back.
  6. Cut bias binding equal to the neckline length. Fold bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place binding along the neckline edge, right sides together, and stitch, then fold binding to the wrong side, clip seams, and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press seam. Stitch the left shoulder seam. Overlock seam allowance and press towards the back.
  7. Set sleeves into armholes. Overlock seam allowances. Finish the lower of the armhole with bias binding. Stitch and overlock side seams.
  8. Overlock the dress hem, fold inwards, and hem with blind stitches.
