Tech. Description

Fitted Ruffled Collar Short Sleeve Blouse

A fitted women's blouse with a pleated, double-layer ruffled collar, a centre front fastening with five buttons, princess seams on the front and back, and short sleeves gathered with elastic at the hem.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with skirts and trousers for the office.
  • Under a cropped jacket for daytime events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted, shaped by princess seams; hip length, with rounded corners at the lower front edge.

Collar: Two collar pieces, each pleated to the markings and folded in half lengthwise; basted together and set between the blouse and the facing. The collar stands up around the neck and opens into a V at the front.

Front: Princess seams from the armholes to the hem. Five buttons with buttonholes on the right front; faced front edges topstitched along the edge.

Back: Centre back seam, princess seams and darts.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves; the hem is double-folded and 0.7 cm elastic is inserted between the markings, giving a gathered edge.

Finishing: Front facings and back neck facing interfaced and secured by hand at the shoulder and centre back seams; hem overlocked, turned and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Pleating and attaching a layered collar between the blouse and facing, princess seams, elastic in the sleeve hem and buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabric from natural or blended fibres: silk, viscose, blended fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front facings, back neck facing)
  • 5 buttons
  • Elastic 0.7 cm wide (approximate length marked on the sleeve pattern)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance for the bottom of the garment – 1.5 cm, hem allowance for the sleeve – 2 cm, other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Center Back – 2 pieces
    • Side Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 2 pieces
    • Side Front – 2 pieces
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 2 pieces
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Center Front Facings and Back Neckline Facing.
  2. Form the pleats on the Collar pieces as marked. Fold each Collar in half lengthwise, right side out. Baste the two Collar pieces together.
  3. Stitch the front princess seams (Front to Side Front). Press seams towards the center and overlock.
  4. Stitch the darts on the back and press them towards the center. Stitch the princess seams (Center Back to Side Back) and the center back seam. Press the princess seams towards the center and overlock. Press the center back seam to the left side and overlock.
  5. Stitch shoulder and side seams. Press seams towards the back and overlock.
  6. Stitch the Back Neckline Facing to the Center Front Facings at the shoulders. Press seams open. Overlock the outer edge of the facings.
  7. Set the collar into the neckline, inserting it between the garment and the facing, simultaneously finishing the front edges. Fold the lower corner of the facing and hand-stitch it to the front princess seam.
  8. Turn the collar to the right side and press. Secure the facing with hand stitches at the center back seam and shoulder seams. Stitch a topstitch along the front edge.
  9. Stitch, press, and overlock the sleeve seams. Fold the sleeve hem twice by 1 cm and press. Insert elastic between the marks and secure with cross stitches. Topstitch the sleeve hem. Set the sleeve into the armhole. Overlock and press the seam.
  10. Overlock the garment hem, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
  11. Work buttonholes on the right front and sew buttons on the left front.
