Tech. Description

Asymmetric Stand Collar Top

A women's top in knit fabric with an asymmetric high collar that ends in a point at the front and is pleated into a two-button tab at one side. The sleeves are cut in one with the upper front and back; a curved seam under the bust and a straight seam across the back join the upper and lower parts.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring with trousers, jeans or straight skirts.
  • On cool days in place of a jumper, as the collar covers the neck.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, with bust darts; hip length.

Collar: Two-layer interfaced collar, high at the back and wrapping to a point at the front. Its pleated end, with pleats pressed downwards, is enclosed in a separate button tab fastened with two buttons and buttonholes.

Sleeves: Three-quarter cut-on sleeves, part of the upper front and upper back, sewn together with the side seams in one pass. Finished with folded, interfaced cuffs stretched slightly when attached.

Front: Upper and lower front joined with a curved seam under the bust; no opening.

Back: Upper and lower back joined with a horizontal seam; both parts cut on the fold.

Finishing: Neckline seam pressed towards the garment and topstitched; hem turned up 1.5 cm and topstitched with a twin needle; seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Working with knit fabric, an asymmetric collar with pleats set into a tab, buttonholes, and cuffs eased onto the sleeve.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with low to medium stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible knit interfacing (one collar piece, cuffs, button tab)
  • 2 buttons

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance - 1.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Upper Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Collar – 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Button Tab (labelled "Zastezjka" on the pattern) – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Collar – 1 piece
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Button Tab (Zastezjka) – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

  1. Fuse knit interfacing to one Collar piece, the Cuffs and the Button Tab.
  2. Stitch the bust darts. Press the darts upwards. Join the Upper Front to the Lower Front and the Upper Back to the Lower Back. Serge seam allowances and press upwards.
  3. Stitch side seams simultaneously with sleeve seams. Serge seam allowances and press towards the back. Stitch shoulder seams. Serge seam allowances and press towards the back.
  4. Place the two Collar pieces right sides together and stitch the upper, vertical and diagonal edges up to the collar attachment mark. Clip the seam allowance at the long mark. Turn the collar right side out and press. Form and secure the pleats. Pleat depths are directed downwards. Fold the Button Tab in half lengthwise right sides together and stitch the upper and lower edges. Trim seam allowances, turn right side out and press. Press unstitched seam allowances inwards. Insert the pleated end of the collar into the Button Tab and stitch. Attach the collar to the neckline. Serge the neckline seam allowance along the contour. Press seam allowances towards the main garment and topstitch.
  5. Stitch each Cuff into a loop. Press seam allowance open. Fold the cuff in half lengthwise. Attach the cuff to the bottom of the sleeve, stretching it slightly. Serge seam allowance.
  6. Serge the hem allowance, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  7. Make buttonholes and sew on buttons.
