Tech. Description

Hooded Reversible Parka Jacket

A women's reversible hooded parka of below-hip length, made as two complete jackets in two fabrics joined at the edges. One side has zipped welt pockets, the other large patch pockets; a separating zip closes the front and a drawstring in a casing draws in the waist.

When To Wear

  • In spring and autumn over a sweater or a shirt, with jeans or trousers.
  • On walks and trips, turned to whichever side suits the outfit.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, loose body, drawn in at the waist by the drawstring.

Length: Below the hip.

Collar: Two-piece hood sewn into the neckline on each side of the jacket; the two hoods are stitched together along the front edge and topstitched 1.5–2 cm from it.

Sleeves: Long, one-piece, sewn into the armholes flat, then closed together with the side seams in one pass; the two sleeve layers are joined at the hem and topstitched 1.5–2 cm from the edge.

Closure: Full-length separating zip inserted between the two jackets at the front edges, topstitched 1.5–2 cm from the edge.

Pockets: Side one (fabric 1): two welt openings on the fronts with zips set under the edges, teeth visible, and pocket bags of lining fabric. Side two (fabric 2): two patch pockets with a double-folded, topstitched upper edge.

Waist: A lining-fabric casing stitched to the wrong side of the front and back along the marked lines; decorative cord passes through two eyelets on the front and is fitted with cord stoppers.

Back: Cut on the fold, with no centre back seam, on both sides.

Finishing: The jacket is bagged out and turned through an opening left in the left sleeve seam of the fabric 1 side, which is then closed.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Zipped welt pockets, eyelets and a drawstring casing, a separating zip set between two layers, and bagging out a reversible jacket.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. From main fabric 2: Press the upper seam allowance of the patch pocket to the wrong side twice by 1 cm and topstitch. Press the seam allowances along the lower and center edges to the wrong side. Place the Patch Pocket on the Front at the markings and topstitch along the side and lower edges.

  3. From main fabric 1: Mark the pocket placement on the Front with parallel lines. Cut the opening. Make diagonal cuts 1-1.5 cm from the end of the marking. Turn the seam allowances to the wrong side through the resulting opening, straighten the edges. Place the zipper under the edges of the opening so that the teeth are visible and stitch. Stitch the pocket bags (Big Pocket Bag and Smaller Pocket Bag), right side down, to the wrong side of the zipper tapes. Stitch the edges of the pocket bags together.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams. Press seam allowances open. Stitch the Sleeves to the armholes. Press seam allowances. Stitch the side seams and sleeve seams in one pass, leaving an opening in the left sleeve seam. Press seam allowances towards the back. Stitch the Hood to the neckline. Press seam allowances open.
  5. Set the eyelets on the Front. Place the Casing on the wrong side of the front and back and stitch along the marked lines.
  6. Place the two jackets right sides together, insert the separating zipper between them and stitch the front edges. Stitch around the hood edge, the lower edge and the sleeve hems. Turn the jacket right side out through the opening. Press the edge seams. Close the opening. Thread the decorative cord through the casing and eyelets and attach the cord stoppers and cord ends.
  7. Topstitch along the sleeve hems, along the zipper, and along the hood 1.5 – 2 cm from the edge.
