Tech. Description

Knot Front Knit Dress

A women's mid-calf dress in soft knit fabric with long set-in sleeves. A separate outer front piece is twisted into a knot at the centre and laid over the inner front, forming a deep V-neckline at the front.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring for day wear, with ankle boots or flat shoes.
  • For a dinner or a family celebration, with heels.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, straight to the hem, shaped with bust darts on the inner front.

Length: Mid-calf.

Neckline: The outer front forms a deep V; below it the inner front has its own round neckline. Both edges are turned in and topstitched.

Front: The inner front is cut on the fold. The outer front, with turned and topstitched neck and lower edges, is twisted to form a knot at the centre and basted to the inner front at the shoulders, side seams and armholes; it ends under the bust.

Sleeves: Long, one-piece, set-in.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam; round back neckline turned in and topstitched.

Closure: None; the dress pulls on over the head.

Finishing: Hem and sleeve hems turned up 1.5 cm and stitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Few pieces and simple seams; the only special step is twisting the outer front into the knot before basting it to the inner front.

Fabric Recommendations

For knit fabric only: soft, drapey knit with medium or high stretch, of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • No supplies are listed besides the main fabric.

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance, sleeve hem allowance, back neckline allowances, inner and outer front allowances, outer front bottom allowance – 1.5 cm, other seams 1.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Outer Front – 1 piece
    • Inner Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is stitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.
