Halterneck Vest with Open Back

A women's fully lined, sleeveless hip-length vest with a wrap front, a wide collar that continues round the back neck as a halter, and an open upper back. Princess seams front and back; a belt tab from the right front fastens through a buckle at the left side.

When To Wear

  • Over a fitted top or alone, with tailored trousers or a straight skirt, in the warm season.
  • For the office or a daytime event as part of a suit.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the princess seams, slightly flared towards the hem.

Length: Hip length.

Collar: Wide collar cut in one with the interfaced front facings, forming a deep V on the front and passing round the back of the neck; the two collar ends are joined at the centre back.

Front: Wrap front with princess seams from the armhole. The right front closes inside with one button and a buttonhole on the facing; a belt tab caught into the right front edge passes through a buckle on a short strap set into the left side seam.

Back: Open above the waist, framed by the halter collar; the lower back has princess seams and a centre back seam.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with deeply cut armholes faced together with the front edges and the upper edge of the back.

Lining: Full lining, cut from the main pattern pieces less the facing width, bagged out through an opening in the left side seam.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Princess seams, a collar cut in one with the facings and joined at the centre back, a belt tab and buckle strap, and a fully bagged-out lining.

Fabric Recommendations

Suiting fabric of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (centre fronts, facings)
  • Lining fabric
  • 1 buckle
  • 1 inner button

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams – 1 cm, hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Center Back – 2 pieces
    • Side Back – 2 pieces
    • Side Front – 2 pieces
    • Center Front – 2 pieces
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    • Bigger Waistband – 1 piece
    • Smaller Waistband – 1 piece
  • From lining fabric:
    • Center Back – 2 pieces
    • Center Front – 2 pieces
    • Side Back – 2 pieces
    • Side Front – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Center Front – 2 pieces
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces

Attention: Front and back lining pieces are cut from the main fabric patterns minus the width of the Center Front Facing.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Fold the Bigger Waistband (belt tab) in half right sides together and stitch one short edge and the long edge. Trim the corners, turn right side out and press.
  3. Fold the Smaller Waistband (buckle strap) lengthwise in half right sides together and stitch along the long edge. Turn right side out and press. Attach the buckle to it.
  4. Stitch the back princess seams (Center Back to Side Back). Press seam allowances open. Stitch the center back seam, press seam allowances open.
  5. Stitch the front princess seams (Center Front to Side Front), press seam allowances towards the center.
  6. Stitch the side seams of the vest and press open, catching the Smaller Waistband into the left side seam.
  7. Sew the lining pieces together, leaving an opening in the left side seam. Stitch the lining to the inner edges of the Center Front Facings. Make a buttonhole on the right front facing.
  8. Place the Bigger Waistband on the right front edge, raw edges aligned, and baste. Place the facings (with lining) and the vest right sides together and stitch the armholes, the upper edge of the back, the front edges, the neckline and the lower corner, stopping 1.5 cm short of the facing edge. Trim the corners, clip the curves. Turn the vest right side out, ease out the seams and press. At the center back of the collar, turn the allowances of the left collar end to the wrong side, insert the right collar end into it and stitch.
  9. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side. Stitch the lining to the hem. Turn the vest right side out through the opening in the lining and slipstitch the opening closed.
  10. Sew on the inner button.
