Tech. Description

Asymmetric Collar Knit Top with Elbow-Length Sleeves

A women's hip-length knit top with elbow-length set-in sleeves and an asymmetric neckline: a wide collar runs diagonally across the front from the right shoulder and meets a small front yoke on the left.

When To Wear

  • With trousers or a pencil skirt for the office.
  • For everyday wear in spring and summer, or under a jacket in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted and straight, shaped by darts on the front.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: On the left side the neckline of the back and front yoke is finished with a self-fabric bias strip, folded in half and topstitched along the fold.

Collar: Two-layer interfaced collar, stitched along its outer edge and turned. It is attached to the front together with the left front yoke, turned down over the front and secured at the centre back seam, the armhole and the side seam, so it continues onto one side of the back.

Sleeves: Set-in, one-piece, elbow length.

Back: Centre back seam, pressed to the left.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hems topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. An asymmetric collar set together with a yoke and anchored into three seams, a bias-bound neckline, darts in knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, in natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit fusible interfacing (collar)
  • Bias binding 4 cm wide (ready-made or cut from the main fabric), length equal to the back neckline plus the front yoke neckline plus 4 cm

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: hem allowance for the garment bottom and sleeve hem – 2 cm, other allowances - 1.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can range from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. Attention! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side of the fabric.

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Front Yoke – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Collar – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

  1. Stitch darts on the front. Press the dart allowances upwards.
  2. Stitch shoulder seams. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  3. Finish the left neckline: Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and with a length equal to the back neckline length + front yoke neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding along the neckline edge, right side facing, and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece.
  4. Place collar pieces right sides together and stitch along the outer edge. Turn the collar right side out and press.
  5. Place the collar right side onto the wrong side of the garment and stitch, simultaneously attaching the front yoke on the left side. Clip allowances, overlock, turn the collar down and press. Attach the collar to the center back seam, armhole, and side seam.
  6. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock allowances, press to the left side.
  7. Stitch side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Stitch sleeve seam, press allowances and overlock. Set sleeves into armholes, press allowances and overlock.
  9. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and sleeves, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
