Tech. Description

Asymmetrical Panel Shift Dress

A women's straight knee-length dress with a wide boat neckline, a diagonal seam across the front bodice and a curved seam at hip level, below which two overlapping contrast plackets form a front opening. Short sleeves end in contrast bands; invisible zipper at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer at the office or for daytime outings.
  • Under a cropped jacket or cardigan on cooler days.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight shift, shaped by darts in the upper front and waist darts in the back.

Length: Knee length.

Neckline: Wide boat neckline, finished with interfaced facings tacked to the shoulder seams and the zipper tape.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves: upper sleeve in the main fabric, lower band in the contrast fabric, seam topstitched 0.5 cm.

Front: Asymmetric. The upper left and right parts meet in a diagonal seam. Each lower part carries a folded contrast placket topstitched along the fold; the right placket overlaps the left and they are joined at the top. Lower and upper parts meet in a curved seam. All these seams are topstitched 0.5 cm.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam and waist darts.

Closure: Invisible zipper at the top of the centre back seam.

Finishing: Topstitching in thread matching the main fabric; hem turned up 2 cm and sleeve hems 1.5 cm, both topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Asymmetric pieces cut right side up (labels are on the right side), matching a diagonal and a curved seam, overlapping plackets, two-colour sleeves and an invisible zipper.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics from natural or blended fibres in two contrasting or related colours; the second colour is for the lower sleeves and plackets.

Additional Supplies

  • Second fabric in a contrasting or related colour
  • Fusible interfacing (neckline facings)

First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).
