When To Wear

  • In spring and summer for daytime events, garden parties or a family celebration.
  • For the office with a short jacket or cardigan over it.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice with princess seams front and back, joined at the waist to a flared panelled skirt.

Neckline: Wide, slightly off the shoulder, faced with the bodice lining.

Sleeves: Short cap sleeves extended from the shoulders, with no separate sleeve piece; armholes finished with the lining.

Front: Upper centre front cut on the fold; the upper side fronts carry several horizontal pleats running from the neckline towards the shoulder, pleat depths pressed upwards. The lining side fronts are cut from a separate pattern without pleats.

Back: Centre back seam with an invisible zip; upper and lower back each made of centre and side pieces joined by princess seams.

Skirt: Flared, cut in centre front, side front, centre back and side back panels that continue the bodice princess seams.

Finishing: Bodice seam allowances pressed open or towards the centre; skirt and waist seam allowances overlocked; hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Lining: Bodice lining only, attached at the neckline and armholes and basted to the bodice at the waist and centre back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Pressed pleats matched across a princess seam, a bodice lined at the neckline and armholes, an invisible zip.

Fabric Recommendations

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance – 2.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch the princess seams joining the Upper Center Back and Upper Side Back, and the Lower Center Back and Lower Side Back. Press the upper (bodice) allowances towards the center. Overlock the lower (skirt) allowances and press them towards the center.
  2. Fold, press and secure the pleats on the Upper Side Front, with the pleat depths directed upwards. Stitch the princess seams joining the Upper Center Front and Upper Side Fronts, and the Lower Center Front and Lower Side Fronts. Press the bodice allowances towards the center. Overlock the skirt allowances and press them towards the center.
  3. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the bodice. Press the allowances open. Stitch the side seams of the skirt. Overlock the allowances and press them towards the back.
  4. Assemble the bodice lining in the same way (without pleats). Press the allowances of the princess seams towards the center, and the side seams towards the back.
  5. Place the bodice and lining right sides together and stitch the neckline. Clip the allowances, turn the lining to the wrong side, and press. Stitch the armhole in two steps: first the front armhole, then the back armhole. Clip the allowances, press the seam. Baste the bodice to the lining along the lower edge and the center back edges. From now on treat them as one piece.
  6. Stitch the bodice to the skirt. Overlock the allowance and press it downwards. Overlock the center back seams separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the hem. Press the allowance open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  7. Overlock the hem allowance, press it to the wrong side, and topstitch.
