Tech. Description

Color Block 3/4 Sleeve Wrap Dress

A women's knee-length knit dress with a mock-wrap front: right and left fronts in two colours, joined by a diagonal seam that turns vertical and ends in a hem slit. Tie belt and three-quarter set-in sleeves.

When To Wear

  • For the office and daytime in autumn and spring.
  • For travel and everyday wear: the low-stretch knit needs no zip or buttons.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, with darts on the front pieces; for knit fabric with low stretch.

Length: Knee length.

Neckline: V-neck at the front formed by the diagonal edge of the right front; round neckline at the back. Finished with interfaced front and back neckline facings.

Front: Two asymmetric fronts sewn together from the neckline to the slit mark, so the wrap is a sewn seam and the dress pulls on. Below the mark the seam opens into a slit, topstitched 0.1 cm from the fold.

Waist: Two belt pieces, one in each fabric: the left belt is caught in the front seam, the right belt in the right side seam; they tie in a bow at the waist.

Sleeves: Three-quarter set-in sleeves, cut in the contrast fabric together with the left front.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Hems turned up 2 cm and topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Sewing knits with stretch stitches or an overlocker, joining a front seam that turns from diagonal to vertical and ends in a slit, inserting tie ends into seams and setting in sleeves.

Fabric Recommendations

Low-stretch knit fabrics made from natural or blended fibres, in two contrasting or related colours: one for the back, right front and right belt, the other for the left front, sleeves and left belt.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible knit interfacing (front and back neckline facings)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance for the garment bottom and sleeve bottom – 2.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (don't forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Back - 1 piece on fold
    • Right front - 1 piece
    • Back neckline facing - 1 piece
    • Front neckline facing - 1 piece
    • Right belt – 1 piece
  • From main fabric 1:
    • Left front - 1 piece
    • Sleeve - 2 pieces
    • Left belt – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back neckline facing - 1 piece
    • Front neckline facing - 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the relevant pieces.
  2. Stitch darts on the front pieces, press seam allowances upwards.
  3. Fold belt pieces lengthwise in half, right sides together, and stitch along the long side and one short side. Turn the belt right side out, straighten, and press.
  4. Serge vertical center edges of the left and right front pieces separately. Stitch the right and left front pieces from the top to the slit mark, inserting the left belt. Press seam allowances on the diagonal section towards the center and serge. Press seam allowances on the vertical section open. Topstitch the slit sides 0.1 cm from the fold.
  5. Stitch shoulder and side seams, inserting the right of the belt into the right side seam. Press seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  6. Stitch shoulder seams of neckline facings, press seam allowances open. Serge the outer edge. Place the facing on the garment, right sides together, and stitch the neckline edge. Turn the facing to the wrong side, straighten, and press. Secure the facing to the main garment at the shoulder seams.
  7. Stitch the sleeve seam, press seam allowances towards the back and serge. Set sleeves into armholes, matching notches. Press seam allowances and serge.
  8. Serge the hem allowance of the garment bottom and sleeve bottom, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
