Tech. Description

Pinafore Lapel Wrap Dress

A women's fitted sleeveless dress with wide straps, a wrap front with a turned-back lapel and a curved front edge that opens towards the hem. Ties sewn into the front edges pass through a buttonhole in the right front and tie at the back of the waist.

When To Wear

  • Over a thin blouse, shirt or fine-knit top in spring and autumn.
  • On its own in summer, for office wear or daytime events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted, close to the body from bust to hem, shaped by princess seams that run into darts on the front and back.

Length: Midi, below the knee.

Neckline: Square back neckline; V-shaped wrap front with a wide lapel formed by the faced front edge.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with wide straps sewn to the top of the front and caught into the back facing; the strap length is adjusted at a fitting. Armholes are finished with bias binding.

Closure: Wrap front, no zipper or buttons. Two waist ties are caught into the front edge seams; one passes through a buttonhole in the right front.

Back: Centre back seam and princess seams; the ties are knotted at the back waist.

Skirt: No waist seam; the overlapping front edge curves down to the hem, leaving a front opening.

Finishing: Interfaced front facings and back facing; hem turned under and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Princess seams ending in darts, a faced wrap front with a lapel, ties and straps caught into seams, bias-bound armholes and a buttonhole for the tie.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress or suiting fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front facings, back facing, straps, ties, buttonhole area on the right front)
  • Bias binding 4 cm wide, or a bias strip cut from the main fabric, for the armholes

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams – 1 cm, hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 2 pieces
    • Strap – 2 pieces
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    • Waistband – 2 pieces
    • Back Facing – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    • Waistband – 2 pieces
    • Strap – 2 pieces
    • Back Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces. Also fuse interfacing to the buttonhole area on the right Front.
  2. Cut the Back between the marked princess seam lines, stopping 6–7 cm short of the dart point. Stitch the princess seam of the back. Overlock allowances and press towards the center. Stitch the center back seam, press allowance to the left side and overlock.
  3. Cut the Front between the marked princess seam lines, stopping 3–4 cm short of the dart point. Stitch the princess seam of the front. Overlock allowances and press towards the center.
  4. Stitch the side seams of the dress. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  5. Fold the strap in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long edge. Turn the piece right side out and press, centering the allowance.
  6. Fold each Waistband (tie) in half lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch along the long edge and one short edge. Trim allowances at corners, turn right side out and press.
  7. Overlock the lower edge of the Back Facing. Overlock the outer edge of the Center Front Facings.
  8. Place the strap on the Front, right side down, and baste along the upper edge. Place the Center Front Facing right side down on the right side of the Front. Stitch along the upper edge and the front edge, catching in the tie (Waistband). Clip allowances, turn the facings to the wrong side and press.
  9. Try on the dress and adjust the strap length. Place the Back Facing on the Back right sides together and stitch, catching in the back end of the strap.
  10. Cut (unless using ready-made) a bias strip 4 cm wide and as long as the armhole + 4 cm. Fold it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Place the binding along the armhole edge on the right side and stitch. Clip allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  11. Make the buttonhole on the right Front (for the tie to pass through).
  12. Overlock the hem allowance, fold inwards and topstitch.
