Tech. Description

Sleeveless Top with Lace Yoke

A women's sleeveless top in knit fabric with a round neck and a curved stretch lace yoke laid over the upper front. Neckline and armholes are bound with bias binding.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own with shorts, skirts or trousers.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan at other times of year.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose, widening slightly from the bust to the hem.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: Round, finished with a 4 cm bias strip folded in half and topstitched to the inside.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with the same folded bias binding.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, its upper edge turned in and topstitched. The lace yoke, also cut on the fold, is placed right side up on the front and topstitched along marked lines; its curved lower edge has no seam allowance.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no seams.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch; hem allowance 2 cm, turned up and topstitched (a twin needle keeps the hem elastic).

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pieces and straight seams; the care needed is in sewing knit fabric with stretch stitches, applying bias binding and topstitching the lace yoke on its marked lines.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric of low to medium stretch, of natural or blended fibres. For the yoke: non-fraying stretch lace.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding for the neckline and armholes, 4 cm wide (ready-made or cut yourself)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Bottom hem allowance – 2 cm. Lower edge of the Front Yoke – 0 cm allowance. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
  • From lace:
    • Front Yoke – 1 piece on fold

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Finish the top edge of the front, fold inwards, and topstitch. Place the Front Yoke right side up on the front and align with the lower marked line. Topstitch from the right side along the upper marked line.
  2. Stitch the right shoulder seam. Finish the allowance and press towards the back.
  3. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the neckline edge right side to right side and stitch. Clip the allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  4. Stitch the left shoulder seam. Finish the allowance and press towards the back.
  5. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the armhole edge right side to right side and stitch. Clip the allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  6. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and finish.
  7. Finish the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
