Tech. Description

Gathered Yoke Dress with Partial Button Front

A straight knee-length women's dress whose yoke is cut in one with long full sleeves; the front and back are gathered into the yoke. A centre front seam opens at the neckline and at the hem, closed with buttons and rouleau loops.

When To Wear

  • In spring and autumn for work or daytime outings, with flat shoes or ankle boots.
  • In summer in a light dress fabric, with the lower buttons left open for walking.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, loose below the yoke, with gathers along the yoke seam at the front and back.

Length: Knee length.

Neckline: Wide round neckline finished with front and back facings.

Sleeves: Long, full sleeves cut in one with the yoke: the back yoke-sleeve is one piece on the fold, the front in two pieces meeting at the centre front. The sleeve and side seams are sewn in one; the sleeve hem is gathered into a cuff.

Closure: Centre front seam stitched between marks, left open at the top and at the hem. Both slits close with buttons and bias-cut rouleau loops sewn to the right front; about ten buttons at the top and eleven at the hem, as drawn. Slit allowances topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Interfaced cuffs with three buttons and buttonholes each; hem turned under 2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering into a yoke cut in one with the sleeve, making and spacing rouleau loops, interfaced slit allowances, cuffs with buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (cuffs, neckline facings, slit allowances)
  • 27 buttons
  • Ready-made loop tape, if you prefer it to self-made rouleau loops

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seam allowances – 1 cm, hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 2 pieces
    • Back sleeve – 1 piece on fold
    • Front sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Back neckline facing – 1 piece
    • Front neckline facing – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Back neckline facing – 1 piece
    • Front neckline facing – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Interface the pieces with fusible interfacing. Also interface the seam allowances of the center edges of the front sleeve parts and the seam allowances of the center seam of the front piece in the area of the upper and lower slits.
  2. Stitch a gathering stitch along the upper edge of the back piece with loosened upper thread and gather. Attach the back sleeve to the back piece, press seam allowances upwards and overlock.
  3. Stitch a gathering stitch along the upper edges of the front pieces with loosened upper thread and gather. Attach the front sleeve parts to the front pieces, press seam allowances upwards and overlock.
  4. Cut a strip 2.5 cm wide at a 45-degree angle for the loop fasteners. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch 0.3 cm from the fold. Trim seam allowances close to the stitching, turn the strip right side out and straighten the rouleau. Cut into sections. Adjust the length of the loops. Stitch the loops onto the right front piece (folds facing away from the edge). Overlock the center edges of the front piece separately. Stitch the center edge of the front piece between the marks, press seam allowances open.
  5. Stitch the upper edge of the sleeve, press seam allowances and overlock. Stitch the lower edges of the sleeve (from the mark) and the side edges in one seam. Press seam allowances and overlock. Stitch a gathering stitch along the lower edge of the sleeve with loosened upper thread and gather.
  6. Fold the cuff in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the short sides. Attach the outer side of the cuff to the sleeve. Fold the seam allowance of the inner side inwards and topstitch into the attachment seam.
  7. Stitch the shoulder edges of the facings, press seam allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place the dress with the facing right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Clip seam allowances at curves, turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Attach the facing to the shoulder seams. Topstitch the seam allowances of the upper and lower slits 0.5 cm from the edge.
  8. Overlock the lower edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  9. Make buttonholes on the cuffs, sew on buttons. Sew buttons on the front piece corresponding to the buttonholes. Tip: instead of self-made loop fasteners, you can use pre-made loop tape.
