Tech. Description

Boat Neck Tie Waist Dress

A knee-length women's dress with a wide boat neckline finished with a facing, short cut-on sleeves with cuffs, and a waist seam. The skirt has an off-centre front seam ending in a slit, the back closes with a concealed zipper, and a separate tie belt is worn at the waist.

When To Wear

  • At the office or for daytime meetings, with court shoes or loafers.
  • In late spring and summer; in a low-stretch knit it also works for travel.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose bodice eased into a waist seam over a straight, close skirt shaped by back darts.

Length: About knee length.

Neckline: Wide boat neckline finished with interfaced front and back facings, tacked to the shoulder seams and the zipper tape.

Sleeves: Short sleeves cut in one with the bodice, finished with a folded, interfaced cuff turned to the right side.

Front: Upper front cut on the fold; lower front cut as separate right and left pieces joined by a seam set off the centre, which opens into a slit at the hem, topstitched 0.1 cm from the edge.

Back: Centre back seam with a concealed zipper; darts in the lower back.

Waist: Waist seam; the belt is stitched, turned and topstitched 0.1 cm around the edge, and ties at the front.

Finishing: Hem overlocked, pressed to the wrong side and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A concealed zipper, an all-in-one neckline facing, a seam slit with interfaced allowances and cut-on sleeves with cuffs.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics with added elastane, made from natural or blended fibres, or low-stretch knit fabrics from natural or blended fibres. For knits, sew with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and topstitch the hem with a twin needle.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (neckline facings, cuffs, slit allowance)
  • Concealed zipper

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). Attention! Markings on the patterns are on the right side!

  2. Stitch the darts on the lower back parts, press the seam allowances towards the center. Attach the back neckline facing to the upper back, press the seam allowances towards the facing. Stitch the upper and lower back parts, easing the upper, press the seam allowances upwards and overlock.
  3. Overlock the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom, press the seam allowances open. Insert the concealed zipper.
  4. Overlock the panel seam edge of the lower front separately. Stitch the panel seam from the waist to the slit mark, press the seam allowances open. Topstitch the slit 0.1 cm from the edge. Attach the front neckline facing to the upper front, press the seam allowances towards the facing. Stitch the upper and lower front parts, press the seam allowances upwards and overlock.
  5. Stitch the side and shoulder seams simultaneously with the sleeve seam, press the seam allowances towards the back and overlock.

Clip the seam allowances at curves, turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Secure the facing to the shoulder seams and the zipper tape.
  7. Stitch the cuff into a loop, press the seam allowances open. Fold the cuff in half lengthwise, right side out. Attach the cuff to the wrong side of the sleeve, overlock the seam allowances. Turn the cuff to the right side.
  8. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
