Tech. Description

Belted Shirtdress With Curved Hem

A knee-length women's shirtdress with a shirt collar on a stand, a buttoned half placket that ends below the waist, front and back yokes and short cut-on sleeves with turned-up cuffs. A separate self-fabric tie belt draws in the waist, and the hem is curved at the sides.

When To Wear

  • In summer for everyday wear and travel, with sandals or flat shoes.
  • Unbelted as a loose shirt dress, or tied at the waist with a light jacket for town.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose, straight cut with no waist seam; the fullness is gathered in by the tie belt.

Length: About knee length, with a hem that curves up at the side seams.

Collar: Pointed shirt collar topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge, set on a separate collar stand; both interfaced.

Sleeves: Short sleeves cut in one with the bodice and sewn together with the side seams, finished with a folded cuff turned to the right side and tacked at the shoulder seam.

Front: Horizontal front yoke seam; interfaced half placket, right over left, with buttons on the placket and the collar stand; centre front seam below the placket.

Back: Back yoke cut on the fold and a centre back seam.

Waist: Separate belt, stitched and turned, worn tied at the front.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; hem overlocked, turned in and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A collar on a stand, a half placket with a clipped corner at its lower end, yoke seams and cut-on sleeves with cuffs.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (plackets, collar, collar stand)
  • 8 buttons

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 1.5 cm, other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back yoke - 1 piece on fold
    • Back - 2 pieces
    • Front - 2 pieces
    • Front yoke – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 2 pieces
    • Collar stand – 2 pieces
    • Belt – 1 piece
    • Placket – 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Placket – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 1 piece
    • Collar stand – 1 piece
